  • Fact Check: 15-all-out T20 match from 2022 went viral MULTIPLE times as 'yesterday's game' across 2023 The consequential cricket match between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers was played in December 2022. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The match took place in December 2022. The Sydney Thunder was bowled out at 15 runs against the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League 2022. “Fifteen, all out,” is an extraordinary cricketing feat, albeit embarrassing for the batting side. And a video showing that happening in a supposedly recent match has been making the rounds on social media. A Twitter user on April 25, while sharing the viral clip of a Twenty20 match, wrote: “Can you believe this....? This took place yesterday at Melbourne, Australia, in a T20 match. Never before seen such a score. And game.” The archived version of the tweet can be seen here. India Today, however, found that this was from a Big Bash League match in December 2022 — and therefore, not recent. Our Probe First, we found that the viral clip had been shared with a similar claim multiple times, once on January 28, then on April 19, then April 20, and finally on April 24. This made it clear that this was not a recent match. The video appeared to be a highlight of a cricket match played between teams sporting green and blue jerseys. The scorecard at the bottom of the screen suggested that the match was being played between Thunder and Strikers. A keyword search using these clues led us to many news reports on what was described as a record-setting match, but on the wrong side of the history. A report by Sportstar published on December 16, 2022, spelt out the details of this unusual cricket match. It noted that The Sydney Thunder was bowled out at 15 runs in a 140-run chase against the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League 2022 in Melbourne, Australia. The Big Bash League is an Australian professional club Twenty20 cricket league, which was established in 2011 by Cricket Australia. The Cricketer described the unusual event as “Sydney Thunder made men's T20 history as they recorded the lowest score in the format's history.” More news reports that expounded on the events of the match can be seen here and here. We also found the complete highlight of the match on YouTube from which the viral video was clipped. The description of the video uploaded on December 16, 2022, noted, “Defending an under-par 9-139, Strikers quicks Henry Thornton and Wes Agar obliterated the Thunder to 15 all out, the lowest ever score in the history of T20 cricket.” Sydney Thunder was bowled out for just 15 runs in merely 35 balls. The team snatched the title which was earlier held by Turkey for being the lowest scorers in men’s T20 history. In 2019, Turkey was bowled out at 21 by the Czech Republic in 2019. Thus, it’s clear a video of a cricket match played in 2022 is being shared as a recent game. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
