  • Quick Take A social media video claims that people who fall ill a lot can rub their arms to strengthen their immune systems. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. The Claim In a Facebook video, a woman demonstrates a technique for enhancing the immune system by rubbing her arms, suggesting that people can remove their frequent illness with this practice. The speaker encourages viewers to use this method to strengthen their immune systems. This video has received 1.3k likes till we last checked. Also, we have attached the screenshot of a keyframe from this video below: Fact Check Is the claim made authentic? Not exactly. The claim made in the video appears unsubstantiated. Only rubbing one’s arms cannot enhance the immune system and reduce illness alone. Moreover, we did not find any references in the video supporting the claim that was made. We also could not find much information on the speaker Jannefie Tubalado Ricarte. She, who owns the page, is taking credit for the kind greetings from people in the comments. Additionally, we noticed that hashtags like ‘#fypシ゚viralシ #fbreels #fbreelsviralvideo #medicalacupuncture’ were used to promote the video, some of which are unrelated to the actual content. Does rubbing arms strengthen the immune system? Not exactly. Rubbing arms, by itself, does not directly strengthen the immune system. However, gentle rubbing or massaging of the arms (or any part of the body) can offer some benefits indirectly related to immune function. Massage or gentle rubbing can promote relaxation, reduce stress levels, improve blood circulation, and contribute to an overall sense of well-being. Lowering stress levels can have a positive impact on the immune system because chronic stress weakens immunity. Still, these activities are not standalone practices for significantly boosting the immune system. Within the video, the woman advises viewers to mimic the arm movements as demonstrated. She claims that performing such exercises aligns the nerves connected to the respiratory tract, which is vital in combating illness. She further explains that illnesses typically start from sneezing and progress to throat and cough issues. Therefore, this exercise helps stimulate this part of the body, aiding in maintaining a healthy respiratory tract. We found no research paper that recommends this exercise or even supports the mechanism given by the woman in the video. Our research shows that it is correct to say to a certain extent that massage can affect nerves to improve the immune system. Evidence shows that specific massage types can affect nerves to improve the immune system. A research paper relates hormones with hormone therapy. However, another article analyzes the effect of lumbar massage on blood flow and muscle fatigue. However, we found no evidence for the claims that working on both arms for approximately 30 seconds each can give better results. Furthermore, no evidence shows that exercising until the arms take on a slight pink hue is beneficial. Senior physiotherapist Upma Lal informs, “The video does not highlight anything new, as different parts of India have long practiced massage before bathing. Simply following the exercises shown in the video will not ensure complete immunity. Proper physical exercise, a balanced diet, and a disciplined approach to life are essential to develope robust immunity. Therefore, the exercises demonstrated in the video could be incorporated alongside other exercises, a comprehensive diet plan, and a disciplined lifestyle”. She further informs, “There are numerous exercises, a balanced diet intake, and a positive approach towards life that are instrumental in increasing immunity. Moreover, individual health status will determine how to boost immunity. Rubbing body parts, applying pressure to hands/fingers, and using oil have been integral parts of our lifestyle. During childhood, and particularly in old age, massage has been employed to maintain health and energy”. THIP MEDIA has previously debunked foot massages prevent Alzheimer’s disease. In another story, we refuted the assertion that ghee massage around the eyes improves vision. Additionally, there is a claim stating that the chiropractic method can eliminate back pain in just 5 minutes, which we have also addressed. What are different ways to improve the immune system? Strengthening the immune system involves various lifestyle adjustments. These practices contribute to immune strength but do not guarantee immunity against illnesses. Some of them have been discussed below: - Maintain a balanced diet that can immune function. - Adequate hydration aids in toxin elimination and bodily function support. - Engage in moderate exercise to enhance circulation and overall health. - Prioritize quality sleep, and manage stress with relaxation techniques to improve immunity - Avoid harmful habits like excessive alcohol and smoking and practice good hygiene. - Consider supplements and limit sugar intake while nurturing social connections.
