  • Fact Check: Video of mother dog rescuing her puppies from floodwaters NOT related to Ukraine's dam collapse A video which has been on the internet for more than seven years was shared by social media users falsely claiming that it shows a dog attempting to rescue her puppies from the flood that followed the collapse of Ukraine's Nova Kakhovka dam. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is more than seven years old; It has been on the internet since as early as December, 2015. The collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine on June 6 resulted in severe flooding and destruction of several villages. Speaking to a US-based news site, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said dead bodies were found floating in the flooded areas. Per reports, as many as 300 animals at the Kazkova Dibrova Zoo also died in the flood. Amidst this tragic event, a heartwarming video of a dog attempting to rescue her puppies from a waterlogged street started circulating on social media. In the video, a dog can be seen gently carrying the puppies in her mouth and swimming through the flooded waters. Those sharing the video claimed that the dog was trying to save her babies from the flood unleashed after the collapse of Nova Kakhovka dam. The archived version of such posts can be seen here, and here. India Today found that the video has been on the internet since as early as 2015. At that time, it was shared during the Chennai floods in Tamil Nadu. Our probe A reverse search of the keyframes of the viral video led us to several media reports that featured the same clip and screenshots from it. According to a news report by Daily Mail published in December 2015, the video was from India. However, it made no mention of any particular place or state in this report. On December 24, 2015, Yahoo News Australia also carried in its report, screenshots from the viral video. Per this report, the video was from the Chennai floods. Around the same time, on December 22, 2015, the video was also uploaded on a YouTube channel named “Amazing Video's”. The channel also stated that the clip was from the Chennai floods. Several Facebook accounts as well shared the viral video in December 2015, claiming it was from the Chennai floods. Chennai saw unprecedented flooding as a result of heavy rainfall between November and December, 2015. According to reports, it was the worst flood the city had experienced in a century. We were not able to independently verify the location of the video. However, it is clear that the video is more than seven years old at least, and not related to the collapse of Ukraine’s Nova Kakhovka dam.
