The archived version of the tweet can be seen here. Newschecker first noticed that the paper held by the purported Israeli ambassador read, “Iranian women deserve freedom now”, suggesting that the protest is not related to the current Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October 2023. We then ran a keyword search for “Israel Ambassador UN Iranian woman protest”, which led us to this Wall Street Journal report, dated September 20, 2023, sharing the video, stating Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations held up a sign that read “Iranian women deserve freedom now” during Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s speech at the UN General Assembly “United Nations security personnel briefly detained Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, as he protested Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s speech at the General Assembly… Erdan made a powerful statement during the General Assembly session by holding up a photograph of Mahsa Amini. The picture carried Erdan’s message: “Iranian women deserve freedom now!”,” read a WION report, dated September 20, 2023. Amini, the young Iranian woman whose death last year while in the custody of Iran’s morality police for not properly wearing her hijab, had sparked global demonstrations. “Erdan, who left the General Assembly Hall with the Israeli delegation, said the UN had reached ‘a new moral low’ by giving a platform to Raisi, who he derided as a ‘vile murderer’,” read a Fox News report, dated September 19, 2023. Similar reports on the incident can be seen here and here, confirming that the viral video predates the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Also Read: Treatment Against Covid Vaccine?
