India Today Fact Check
This video is from a pedestrian overpass in Bangladesh’s Dhaka.
A video of a group of people attempting to walk up on an escalator moving downward has gone viral on social media. Allegedly, this incident took place at a pedestrian overpass in India. The archived version of the post can be seen here.
India Today found that the video was from Bangladesh’s Dhaka and not India.
OUR PROBE
Reverse searching the viral video's keyframes led us to a high-resolution version of the same video shared on Facebook by a person from Bangladesh on June 6.
Suspecting that the video was from Bangladesh, we contacted the Dhaka Bureau of India Today for further information.
Our Dhaka correspondent said that one of the posters pasted on a grey pillar to the left of the escalator showed Hazi Saifuddin Ahmed Milon of the Jatiya Party, who was a mayoral candidate in the Dhaka South City Corporation in 2020.
This confirmed that the video was likely from Bangladesh.
We then searched for videos of pedestrian bridges in Dhaka that have escalators. This led us to a video from the same location as the viral video uploaded to YouTube on August 3, 2021.
In this video, we observed a white and blue board with a hole in the middle, similar to what appeared in the viral video.
According to the video’s description, this bridge was located in the Banani-Kakoli area of Dhaka. A comparison between the two videos can be seen here.
We were able to geolocate the same bridge on Google Maps. A comparison between certain shots from the YouTube video and photos of the bridge uploaded by people on Google Maps confirmed that the video was indeed from the bridge in the Banani-Kakoli area of Dhaka.
Also, in one of the frames of the viral video, we could see "And Sustainable Environment" written in Bangla on the bridge.
We then ran a Google search for these keywords along with “Bangladesh” in the query, which led us to a page on the World Bank website about a project named "Clean Air and Sustainable Environment".

According to the site, CASE was a World Bank-sponsored project implemented to improve air quality and safe mobility in Dhaka.
According to a report by The Daily Star, the escalator at the Banani overpass was installed in 2014 as part of the CASE project. We could also see "Clean Air and Sustainable Environment" written in Bangla on the bridge in one of the photos on Google Maps.
So, while we couldn't ascertain the exact date when the video was shot, it is evident that the footage is from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and not India.
