India Today Fact Check
Although the Gaza health ministry alleged a similar attack, this video is from Egypt and dates back to August 14, 2013.
A horrific video of a bulldozer running over bodies draped in white has been widely shared by many online. Allegedly, this was an Israeli bulldozer targeting patients at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza. "Israeli bulldozers ran over displaced people and patients at Kamal Adwan Hospital. Share and expose their crime," read one such post on X.
On Facebook, one person wrote, "Horrific Video as an Israeli Bulldozer purposely running over immobile and seriously injured Palestinian patients in the grounds of Kamal Adwan Hospital. War Crimes by Israel."
The Free Press Journal, on its official YouTube channel, uploaded this video and claimed it from the Gaza hospital. An archived version of this video and similar social media posts can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that this video is more than a decade old and from Egypt, not Gaza.
Our Probe
A search with relevant keywords led us to reports in Reuters and France24 published on December 17. Both mentioned an alleged bulldozer attack by Israel on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza City, as claimed by the Gazan Health Ministry.
Another report in Maktoob Media claimed that Israeli bulldozers deliberately destroyed tents used by Palestinians seeking refuge outside Kamal Adwan Hospital, crushing them. Notably, at the time of publishing this story, no international outlet featured photos or videos of this in their reports.
Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we found an extended version of the same clip uploaded to the YouTube channel of Al Jazeera. Uploaded on August 26, 2013, the Arabic caption of this video read: "A bulldozer sweeps away dozens of bodies of victims of the Rabaa massacre."
This made it abundantly clear that the video is in no way related to the Israel-Hamas war. The description of the original video further mentioned that the incident happened on August 14, 2013, during a sit-in protest when a bulldozer swept away dozens of bodies of victims of the Rabaa massacre.
What is the Rabaa Massacre?
In August 2013, thousands in Egypt took to the streets demanding the reinstatement of the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, who was forced to resign as Egyptian Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi led a coalition to become president of Egypt.
During such protest on August 14, 2013, the Egyptian military mercilessly shot, bulldozed, and killed protestors. An investigation by Human Rights Watch reported the deaths of at least 817.
