  • Fact Check: This video of Kerala woman who joined ISIS is clipped from film teaser for 'The Kerala Story' A viral video shows a Hindu woman from Kerala who was converted to Islam, became an ISIS terrorist and is currently jailed in Afghanistan. India Today AFWA has found the claim to be misleading. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from the teaser of an upcoming movie titled “The Kerala Story” by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. A monologue video of a woman donning a burqa has been widely shared on social media by many people who claimed that she was a Hindu woman who ended up in jail in Afghanistan after being radicalised by ISIS. In the video, the woman can be heard saying, “My name was Shalini Unnikrishnan. I wanted to be a nurse to serve humanity. Today I’m Fatima Ba. An ISIS terrorist in Afghanistan jail. I’m not alone. Like me, 32,000 women have already been converted and buried in the deserts of Syria and Yemen.” She alleged that this was openly happening in Kerala, pleading to people to put an end to this. The archived versions of similar posts ( ) can be seen here and here. AFWA found that the video was from the teaser of an upcoming movie titled “The Kerala Story”. AFWA probe At the end of the viral video, one can see “The Kerala Story” written on a black background. Several people on social media had shared the same video with the hashtag #TheKeralaStory. Many on Twitter also claimed the clip is from an upcoming movie. We also found multiple media reports about the viral video. Per an India Today report published on November 4, the woman in the video is actor Adah Sharma. The report also says the scene was from a teaser of her upcoming movie “The Kerala Story”, directed by Sudipto Sen. According to reports, the movie is about women from Kerala who were radicalised to join ISIS. A longer version of the viral video was tweeted by Sharma on November 3. This longer version video says the movie was directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the banner of Sunshine Pictures. A “Coming Soon” text also appears at the end of the video. The teaser was also uploaded to the YouTube channel Sunshine Pictures on November 3. The caption to the video reads, “Heartbreaking and gut-wrenching stories of 32,000 females in Kerala! Coming Soon!” Whether 32,000 women from Kerala were trafficked by the terrorist outfit, a claim that has been debated on social media, is not the focus of this investigation. It should also be noted that of the many people sharing the video, only a handful seemed to have confused the film teaser for a real incident.
