  • Fact Check: Hindus celebrating Diwali in Nagaland? This video of fireworks is from Argentina India Today Fact Check found that an unrelated video from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was falsely shared as Nagaland residents celebrating Diwali. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not from Nagaland. It is from the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Videos of firecrackers and fireworks on social media are ubiquitous around Diwali. One such video now being shared purports to show how the Hindu festival was celebrated in Nagaland, a majority Christian state. The video shows thousands of people setting off firecrackers from their seats. It was shared with captions like: "Hindus of Nagaland celebrating Diwali". Another such post claimed this video was from Nagaland’s Dimapur Stadium. India Today Fact Check, however, found that the video is not even from India. It is from Estadio Mâs Monumental or Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. OUR PROBE Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to the same clip uploaded to a football-related YouTube channel named V-Red Baller on October 30, a day before Diwali was celebrated in India this year. The video was titled: "River Plate fans go CRAZY vs Atlético MG at El Monumental for the Copa Libertadores!" Club Atlético River Plate, commonly known as River Plate, is an Argentine football club based in the capital Buenos Aires. A search with related keywords led us to an X post by an Argentine football news account, which featured a similar video from this stadium. It was captioned: "The Estadio Monumental, in Buenos Aires, was filled with fireworks ahead of the 2024 Copa Libertadores semi-final. Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro drew 0-0 with River Plate to reach the final for just the second time." Reportedly, the stadium was shut down due to the unauthorised use of firecrackers by Millonarios, or the fans of Brazil's Atletico Mineiro football club, as they reached the finals of the Copa Libertadores for the second time. This proved that this video was not from Nagaland. HOW DID NAGALAND CELEBRATE DIWALI? Though not on a large scale as portrayed, reports from India Today and Nagaland Post suggested that the skies were lit with fireworks on the evening of October 31, amidst a ban issued by the administration against the crackers. Governor La Ganesan also celebrated from Kohima Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio wished people Diwali. We also found videos of people celebrating Diwali in Kohima by lighting crackers, offering Puja, and exchanging gifts and sweets on the YouTube channel of Nagaland Today. The video can be seen below. Therefore, it is clear that a video of football fans from Argentina was falsely shared as Hindus of Nagaland celebrating Diwali.
