  • Last Updated on August 9, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that consuming Egg and Banana together is harmful. We did a fact check on the same and found out that the claim is false. The Claim The message has appeared a number of times on social media in different formats from different users including a professional football player in Ghana. Most of the claims revolve around “Never eat an egg and banana at the same time because their mixture gives a poison that kills within 5 minutes.” A few snapshots of the viral message is given below Fact Check Are Egg and Banana harmful foods? Egg and Banana are in fact very healthy foods. As per WebMD, ‘Along with milk, eggs contain the highest biological value (or gold standard) for protein. One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids.’ Bananas are also very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Potassium and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin B6. If eaten together, can egg and banana turn poisonous? There is no scientific evidence for the claim. Also, many popular dishes including pancakes are often made from combining bananas and egg. Yet, we decided to clarify the viral claim from multiple dietitians and nutritionists. Kajal Gupta, Dietitian and Nutritionist, says, ” Both egg and banana are super foods and are great source of nutrition. This type of statements are fake and people should be made aware of food values of such foods. Mixing egg and banana do not result in any poisonous effect. Individuals may however keep an eye on issues like allergy or indigestions. For people with certain pre-existing diseases like Kidney disease where we have to control a particular mineral intake, the patient maybe adviced against bananas or eggs. But that does not mean eating egg and bananas together is injurious.” Another social media post claims that eating banana along with milk causes indigestion, banana with potato causes hyperpigmentation and banana with watermelon causes diarrhoea. Vartika Singhal, Wellness & Performance Dietitian and Founder of nutriAahar says, “There is no harm in eating eggs and bananas at the same time – unless they are contaminated by harmful substances. People with extremely high diabetes may avoid bananas but there is no question of it causing any poisonous effect in the body. If someone is consuming raw egg mixing it with banana, then the sulphur content in raw egg may react with the carbohydrate in the banana resulting into digestion issues, but again its not fatal.”
