Users link it to the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake that has left over 15,000 dead. However, Newschecker has found that the video is old and unrelated to the recent earthquake. Sharing the video on Twitter, handle @imIdress0719 wrote, “#earthquake in #Turkey hundreds of people removing rubble in search of survivors.” The archive of the post can be seen here We began our investigation by closely analysing the viral video and found a watermark of ANN news on the top left of the video. We also noticed a text, written in Japanese script, on the top right corner of the video. Taking a hint, we performed a keyword search for “ANN news japan earthquake” on youtube and found a similar video posted on the ANN news channel dating back to 17 January 2020. The video description suggested that the visuals were originally recorded at the Sendai airport located in Miyagi city of Japan during the devastating 2011 Tsunami and earthquake. Comparing the two videos shows that the first 30 seconds of the video uploaded by ANN news is identical to the viral video, confirming that the viral video is clipped from the video uploaded by ANN news. We can thus conclude that the chilling footage purportedly showing a restaurant being rocked by the Turkey earthquake is actually from Japan’s Sandai airport, recorded during the 2011 earthquake.
