India Today Fact Check
Bhuban Badyakar was not hired by the Indian Railways. The man in this video is KK Murmu, a railway guard. This video was shot in October 2021 at the Barauni Junction Railway station in Bihar.
A video purportedly featuring Bhuban Badyakar — whose song “Kacha Badam” became a rage on social media — speaking through a walkie-talkie on a train has gone viral on social media. Those sharing it claimed that after the peanut seller from West Bengal became a social media sensation, the Indian Railways gave him a job as a “railway manager”.
In this video, a man in a white uniform was seen giving instructions to someone on a walkie-talkie while standing near the door of a train. The man bore a resemblance with Badyakar.
Following that, as the train started moving, the man smiled at the one person recording this. Throughout the short video, the “Kachcha Badam” song played.
A Facebook user shared the video with the caption, “The singer of ‘Kachcha Badam song has gotten a job now. He has become a railway manager.”
At the time of writing this, the video had more than six million views.
India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the man in the white uniform was not Bhuban Badyakar. This was confirmed by both, the singer, and the person who shot the video.
AFWA PROBE
We did not find any news report of Badyakar getting hired by the Indian Railways. It seems unlikely that such a thing would not get reported, considering the singer has been very much in the media spotlight since his song became a viral number on social media.
To set the record straight, we sent the viral video to Badyakar and asked if it showed him and if he was now employed by the Indian Railways. He told us that neither did the video show him, nor was he offered a job in the Indian Railways. He said he was busy writing and recording his own songs.
TRACKING THE ORIGIN OF THE VIDEO
We noticed “Tejas” written on the train and a watermark for “Daily Travel Hack” in the video.
Using this clue, we found a slightly longer version of this video on the Instagram account @dailytravelhac. This version did not have the “Kachcha Badam” song playing in it.
The Instagram post was captioned, “When my son was ready to go with Tejas Guard.”
‘Daily Travel Hack’ is a travel vlog run by Dhananjay Kumar from Bihar. We contacted him to find details about the video.
Kumar told India Today that he shot the video in October 2021 at the Barauni Junction Railway station in Bihar. “The white-uniformed man in the video is not Bhuban Badyakar. He just resembled him. The train seen in the video on the other hand was Agartala-Anand Vihar Tejas Rajdhani Express.” he said.
Kumar told us that his son Daksh was the one shouting “Chaliye” multiple times in the video.
He also mailed us the original version of the video. The file’s details mentioned the date of media creation as October 12, 2021. We extracted the video’s Exif Data that further confirmed the video was shot on October 12, 2021.
We also spoke to railway guards working at the Barauni Junction railway station. One of them, Manoj, confirmed to India Today that the person seen in this video was railway guard KK Murmu. “He often travels in the UP-Bihar bound trains. Last Thursday also he had arrived in Barauni on the Tejas Rajdhani Express train,” he said.
Thus, we concluded that the man in the video was not Bhuban Badyakar, and claims of him getting employed by the Indian Railways were false.
