  • Last Updated on October 3, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that Keto diet alleviates the issue with the spike protein produced by Covid-19 Vaccine. We fact checked and found this claim to be false. The Claim A social media post on Facebook reads, ‘Doctors I’ve heard speaking say there is no way to help people who have taken the c-shots. I disagree! My theory is that a keto diet could alleviate the issue with the spike protein that is produced by them. Proteins and other nutrients are absorbed and stored in fat tissue. The spike is exactly that, a protein. Theoretically, being in ketosis (body using fat instead of carbs as energy) could expel spike proteins that would otherwise be absorbed by fat tissues, as you’re burning that fat off as fuel.’ Fact-Check What is a spike protein? For SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus), Spike protein is a biological characteristic of the virus that allows the virus to penetrate the host cells, which causes infection. Which type of vaccines produce spike protein in the body? mRNA Vaccines produce spike protein in the body. According to the CDC, “Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines teach our cells how to make a protein that will trigger an immune response inside our bodies.” What happens is that the cells start making the Spike protein pieces and start displaying them on cell surfaces because of which the body starts creating antibodies. In future, if you become infected with the COVID-19 virus, these antibodies will fight the virus. After delivering instructions, the mRNA is immediately broken down. It never enters the nucleus of your cells, where your DNA is kept. Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines use mRNA. It benefits people without risking the potential serious consequences of getting sick. Till now, adverse events associated with the mRNA vaccine are usually short-term and mild. This inquiry into dietary influences also intersects with public health narratives, especially amid misinformation regarding vaccine recalls. Do spike proteins produced by COVID vaccine create an issue with it? No. Rather the vaccines create memory, thus creating immunity by producing spike protein of the virus using our own cells. This spike protein creates an immune response to the spike in the future, i.e., it induces an immune response as when the actual virus enters our body, the immune system will identify it as a foreign invader and will try to eliminate it. Can Keto diet alleviate the issue with the spike protein produced by Covid-19 Vaccine? No. There is no scientific evidence that proves that the Keto diet alleviates the issue with the spike protein produced by Covid-19 Vaccine. Research indicates that because of a keto diet, there is a physiological increase in plasma levels of ketone bodies, which exerts anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating effects that may help in preventing infection and potential adverse outcomes of COVID-19 disease. Keto diet is proven to be effective in various medical conditions such as Epilepsy, etc., but there is no proven correlation between keto diet and Covid-19 spike protein yet. Therefore, the claim remains false until there is substantial evidence to prove it otherwise.
