(Trigger warning: Suicide)
A disturbing video of a person allegedly dying by suicide inside London's Heathrow Airport has gone viral on social media. In the video, the person can be seen flinging himself over a railing and falling to the ground. People around him could be seen experiencing shock and subsequently rushing to help the person.
When sharing the video, many claimed that the victim, allegedly a Nigerian man, died by suicide to avoid being deported back to his country. This clip was shared on Twitter with similar claims. The archived version of such a post can be seen here.
India Today found that the video is more than five years old and not from London's Heathrow Airport.
Our Probe
Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across a Fox News report from March 1, 2018, that featured screenshots from the same video. Per this report, the incident took place at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, in the US. The report also mentioned that the man had sustained “serious injuries” during the fall.
A spokesman for the Atlanta police told Fox News that the man appeared to be intoxicated and berated other passengers in front of a bar at the airport. The report also said that airport officials arrived shortly before he jumped. The Daily Mail on February 28, 2018, reported the same.
According to the Atlanta police, the man was identified as Kyle Phillips, 32. None of these reports, however, said anything about Phillips dying by suicide or being a Nigerian immigrant. On the contrary, police spokesperson Stephanie Brown said that Phillips was "alert, conscious and breathing" despite his severe injuries when medical staff took him away. Reportedly, Phillips faced charges of disorderly conduct and intoxication as well.
Although we could not independently verify the nationality of the man, it is safe to conclude that an old video from the US is being shared with questionable allegations.
