Quick Take
A viral social media post claims that cloves can clean the lungs and stop coughing within three days. After fact checking, we determined this claim is mostly false.
The Claim
A Facebook post states that cloves can clean the lungs and stop coughing in three days. The post directs viewers to an article promoting a clove and honey infusion as a remedy for bronchitis and other respiratory issues.
Fact Check
Can cloves remove toxins and cleanse the lungs?
No, cloves do not cleanse the lungs. The lungs have a natural mechanism for self-cleaning through mucus production and cilia (tiny hair-like structures that remove debris). While cloves contain antioxidants and antimicrobial compounds, there is no scientific evidence that they detoxify or cleanse the lungs of toxins.
Similarly, another home remedy claims that applying a mixture of clove and glycerine can tighten the skin overnight. However, cloves do not have proven anti-ageing properties, making this claim incorrect as well.
Can cloves cure bronchitis and other respiratory infections?
No, cloves cannot cure bronchitis or other respiratory infections. Bronchitis is often caused by viruses or bacteria, and treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral bronchitis usually resolves on its own, while bacterial bronchitis may require antibiotics. Cloves may help soothe a sore throat or reduce inflammation but do not replace medical treatment.
We spoke with Dr Muskan Thakur, BAMS, Ayurveda Consultant from Indore, for her expert opinion on using cloves for curing bronchitis and respiratory infections. She says, “Cloves are valued in Ayurveda for their warming properties and antimicrobial effects and are often used in herbal formulations for respiratory health. They can help soothe throat irritation and support overall lung function. However, relying solely on cloves to cure bronchitis or other respiratory infections is not advisable. Ayurveda emphasises a holistic approach, including dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes customised to an individual’s condition. Severe or persistent symptoms should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional to ensure proper treatment.”
On a related note, there are claims that cloves with apples can cure migraines and acidity. But this remains unproven.
Does clove and honey infusion stop coughing in three days?
Not necessarily. While honey is known to help relieve cough symptoms, cloves alone do not have strong enough medicinal properties to stop coughing within three days. The effect of a clove infusion on cough relief is not backed by strong clinical evidence. Over-the-counter cough remedies and proper hydration are more effective.
A 2023 study reported four cases where people developed serious lung issues after using cloves to prevent coughing. Instead of relief, they experienced chronic cough and breathing problems because the cloves accidentally entered their airways. These cases highlight the dangers of self-treatment. The patients believed cloves would help, but instead, their symptoms worsened. Misdiagnosis followed, as their condition mimicked asthma or lung infections, leading to unnecessary treatments. Removing the cloves was also difficult since they swelled and broke apart inside the lungs, requiring advanced medical procedures. This study serves as a warning that home remedies aren’t always safe. While cloves have benefits, chewing them—especially before sleep—can lead to severe complications. It’s always best to seek medical advice for persistent coughs rather than relying on self-treatment.
These risks highlight the dangers of self-treatment for common coughs. Dr Almas Fatma, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai, explains, “Relying on home treatments for cough relief can do more harm than good. While some natural ingredients may provide mild relief, there is no strong clinical evidence that they can stop coughing entirely. In some cases, they can even worsen symptoms or cause complications. Safer options include honey, steam inhalation, and doctor-recommended medications. It’s always best to seek medical advice for persistent coughs rather than risking unverified treatments.”
Similarly, another home remedy suggests that wrapping an alcohol-soaked cloth around the neck can cure a cough. However, this claim is false.
Do cloves help expel phlegm?
Maybe, but not significantly. Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with mild expectorant properties, which may help loosen mucus slightly. However, they are not a proven treatment for excessive phlegm production caused by infections or chronic lung conditions.
THIP Media Take
The claim that cloves can clean the lungs and stop coughing within three days is mostly false. Cloves have some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but they do not detoxify the lungs or cure respiratory infections. While a clove and honey infusion may provide mild symptom relief, it is not a proven remedy for bronchitis or severe coughs. Always rely on medical advice for respiratory issues.
