  • FACT CHECK: Was A U.S. Submarine Near The Nord Stream Explosion? A post shared on Facebook purports a U.S. submarine was near the Nord Stream pipeline when it exploded in an effort to blame Russia. Verdict: False The claim stems from an article published on a satirical website. A spokesperson for the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG) denied the claim. Fact Check: Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak labeled damage caused to the Nord Stream pipeline as a Russian “act of aggression,” BBC reported. The explosion destroyed “at least 50 meters” of the pipeline, according to the outlet. The Facebook post purports a U.S. submarine was near the Nord Stream pipeline when it exploded and may have affected its functionality. The post further alleges President Joe Biden made the explosion look like it had been carried out by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to an anonymous JAG source. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting a U.S. submarine was near the pipeline when it exploded or that it affected the pipeline’s functionality. JAG has neither issued a press release nor a statement via its verified Twitter page commenting on the claim. Nord Stream has also not issued a statement responding to the claim. “JAG has no knowledge of the information featured in the post,” spokesperson Patricia Babb told Check Your Fact in an email. (RELATED: Does This Video Show A B-2 Bomber Arriving In Poland?) A keyword search reveals the claim stems from an Oct. 18 article published on the website, “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” This is not the first time a satirical article has been promoted as true on social media. Check Your Fact recently debunked a post claiming U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink had been arrested for treason.
