  • Fact Check: Bollywood stars aren't boycotting people - these pics are from 2018 Kathua gang rape protest According to the AFWA probe, the photos have been digitally altered. They are from 2018, when actors and singers protested against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano in Khatua, Jammu and Kashmir. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check These photos were digitally altered. They are from 2018 when actors and singers protested against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano in Khatua, Jammu and Kashmir. Actor Arjun Kapoor recently spoke about the trend of boycotts against Bollywood movies. He said, “I think we made a mistake by being silent about it and that was our decency, but people have started taking advantage of that,” adding that the Bollywood fraternity needs “to come together and do something about it because what people write about us or the hashtags that trend, are far away from reality.” Following this, many on social media shared a collage of actors and singers holding placards saying “Boycott People”. Those sharing this claimed, “In protest of the ‘Boycott Bollywood Campaign’, Bollywood strikes back after an appeal by superstar Arjun Kapoor.” In protest of #BoycottBollywood Campaign #Bollywood strikes back after appeal by superstar #ArjunKapoor !! #Urduwood has decided to boycott people. Now they will make films but will not release them.@arjunk26 @karanjohar @iHrithik @BeingSalmanKhan #BoycottbollywoodCompletely pic.twitter.com/8Su9ASVz7F — Bhavya (@bhavya1705) August 17, 2022 AFWA’s probe revealed that these photos were digitally manipulated. These photos are from 2018 when stars protested against the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. Archived versions of posts with similar claims can be seen here AFWA Probe The first thing we noticed was that the placards’ text looked digitally added. So, we tried to look for the original photos. We first reverse-searched the image and found the same collage on Facebook Subsequent searches led us to a news report from April 15, 2018, that contained photos seen in the collage. Actors like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Radhika Apte, Esha Gupta and others held placards that read, “I am Hindustan. I am Ashamed. #Justiceforourchild 8-year-old gang-raped. Murdered. In ‘Devi’-sthan Temple. #Kathua.” We also found two photos from this collage on the Instagram profiles of actors Swara Bhaskar and Kalki Koechlin. Hence, we conclude that the viral collage was digitally manipulated. Bollywood actors and singers are not boycotting people following Arjun Kapoor’s statement.
