Social media users are sharing two different images and linking it to the recent win of Afghanistan cricket team against England at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
One of the images allegedly shows an Afghan cricketer celebrating his team's win with the Indian national flag.
Another image allegedly shows Afghan fans waving a banner which displays two hands shaking, painted in Indian and Afghanistan’s national flags in Pakistan during the recent Champions Trophy match.
Let's debunk these claims:
IMAGE 1:
We noticed that the flag is suspended in the air and the man's hand aren't grasping onto the flag.
We then reviewed the replay of the group stage match between England and Afghanistan from the ICC Champions Trophy match that was held on 26 February 2025.
Here we found the original version at 9:09: 20 timestamp and it shows Afghanistan team member Rashid Khan walking towards Afghanistan cricket team support staff member.
However, the staff member was not holding an Indian national flag in his hands.
IMAGE 2:
We noticed that the viral image carries a logo of 'ICC men's cricket world cup India 2023' on the left corner.
We then performed a reverse image search on this image which led us to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on 7 November 2023.
Further, we performed a relevant keyword search on X and found the same image posted by journalist Jafar Haand on 7 November 2023.
The post mentioned that this still is from the match between Afghanistan and Australia in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
We also found details of the match which backed up the caption
Conclusion: Old and unrelated images are being shared to falsely link India with Afghanistan team's victory against England in ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
