  • Fact Check: Titanic submarine has NOT been found without passengers, Fake CNN report screenshot viral India Today found that the CNN report in circulation is fabricated. No such report was published by the organisation. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This report was fabricated and not published by CNN. At the time of writing this, the missing submarine was not found. Titan, a small OceanGate submersible vessel, went missing on June 18 along with its five passengers shortly after it dove into the North Atlantic Ocean in an expedition to see the wreckage of the famous Titanic. News of its disappearance gripped people worldwide, and it has been a topic of discussion and updates on social media ever since. Now, a screengrab of what appears to be a CNN news report about the missing vessel is being widely shared. As per this alleged report, the missing submersible was found, but without any passengers. The article attributed this information to the co-founder of OceanGate, identified as Wendy Rush. She was quoted saying, “The submarine was bolted from the outside making it impossible for the passengers to exit the submarine, almost as if they vanished." The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today found that the CNN report in circulation is fake. The media organisation has not published any such report. At the time of writing this, search and rescue operations were still underway. Our Probe First, we could not find any such report on CNN’s website. Not just that, we found no credible news report saying this anywhere. Furthermore, we noticed that the screenshot circulating on social media did not match the format and style typically used by CNN. The dateline in the viral screenshot appeared at the bottom of the report, while CNN's reports, including live blogs, always begin with the dateline. The date format in the screenshot also differed from CNN's standard format. The date format followed by CNN is as follows: “Updated 10:28 AM EDT, Thu June 22, 2023”. Whereas, in the screenshot in question, the date was written as: “06/21/2023 06h59 Updated 1 hour ago”. CNN confirmed it’s fake Emily Kuhn, a spokesperson for CNN, confirmed to the Associated Press that the report was fabricated, and it was not published by the media organisation. It’s worth noting that Wendy Rush, who was identified as the co-founder of OceanGate in the viral screenshot, is the wife of Stockton Rush, the CEO and founder of the company. She married Stockton Rush in 1986 and her LinkedIn page says that she serves as the company’s communications director. It adds that Wendy, a board member of the company’s charitable foundation, participated in three previous OceanGate expeditions to the Titanic wreckage. Stockton Rush was piloting the submersible that disappeared. It was hence clear that the news report in circulation was fabricated and not published by CNN.
