  • A video showing a huge crowd around a blue trolley bag is being shared on social media platforms. It is being shared as one from West Bengal. The video claims that a young man named Akram lured a Hindu girl into marriage in West Bengal and subsequently killed her and put her remains in the trolley bag. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. The video is from Kumartuli in Kolkata. It was a case of two women killing one of their female relative. This video was shot when they were trying to dump the blue trolley in the river and were caught by a mob. Barasat police has denied the communal claim in this case. What we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them. We came across a similar video on YouTube by a channel named Jiyar Mallick which said that two women killed their mother-in-law and tried dumping it in the Ganga. We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and came across an article by India Today which reported that mother-daughter, Falguni Ghosh and Arati Ghosh, were caught by locals while trying to dispose of a body in the Ganga river in Kolkata. The body was identified as Sumita Ghosh, the sister of Falguni’s father-in-law. Sumita, originally from Assam’s Jorhat, had been living with them since 11 February. Police believe she was killed during an argument with Falguni. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and the investigation was transferred to Barasat district police. Similarly, The Telegraph and Indian Express also reported on the matter. However, none of these media reports noted a communal angle to this case. Police comments: The Quint spoke to Pratiksha Jharkhariya, Superintendent of Police from Barasat who denied the alleged communal angle in this case. She said that the two women were arrested for killing the father-in-law's sister in their home. When they tried dumping the body is when they were caught. Conclusion: A false communal claim has been attached to the viral video to insinuate that a Muslim man killed a Hindu woman.
