India Today Fact Check
This video has been on the internet since as old as May 2019. At the time, it was widely shared as destruction caused by Cyclone Fani in Puri, Odisha.
Photos and videos of huge waves and tempestuous waters have been making the rounds on social media, with Cyclone Biparjoy all set to make landfall in India and Pakistan’s Arabian Sea coasts. One such dramatic video shows an Indian Oil petrol pump caught up in a storm. The canopy of the petrol station was seen being ripped apart by strong winds.
Allegedly the video showed Dwarka, Gujarat, experiencing recent cyclonic weather, and those sharing the video used hashtags related to Biparjoy. Its archived version can be seen here.
India Today, however, found that the viral video is old and not related to stormy winds caused by Biparjoy. The video has been on the internet since as early as May 2019 when Cyclone Fani hit Odisha.
Our Probe
Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to a Daily Mail report from 2019 that featured what looked like a longer version of the same video. According to the report, a petrol station in India was wrecked by winds stronger than 200 km/h induced by Cyclone Fani. The report, however, did not add where in India the video was from.
We also found the video in question shared on Dailymotion, a video-sharing platform. The video titled "Dramatic moment Indian petrol station is engulfed in dust by cyclone winds" was shared by an account called Newsflare on May 3, 2019.
Further, we came across YouTube uploads of the viral video shared four years ago, which can be shared here and here. Descriptions on YouTube said that the incident occurred in Puri, Odisha, but missed out on details.
We found the video also shared in a News18 report from May 5, 2019, two days after Fani made landfall in Odisha. The report, which was a curation of videos shared on social media, did not however independently verify if the video was from Puri as the tweet claimed.
Fani killed more tha 60 people in Odisha in 2019 and destroyed infrastructure and property all over the state. According to an India Today report from May 2019, Puri suffered extensive damage.
While we couldn't establish the exact location or date of the incident with certainty, it is clear that it is at least four years older than Cyclone Biparjoy.
