Quick Take
A social media user has shared a video claiming Covid vaccine has formed a new blood group named ER. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. The ER blood group existed way before Covid happened.
The Claim
An Instagram user in a video claimed that mRNA Covid vaccine or vaccine injury formed the ER blood group. The user further claimed that ‘A 44th blood group has been discovered in the UK and confirmed in at least 30 people over the last couple months’.
Fact Check
Is ER blood group new?
Not exactly. According to a research published in 2013, ER blood group system was established in 1990. The antigen Era was first reported in 1982, and Erb was reported in 1988.
Did Covid vaccine form a new blood group named ER?
No evidence confirms that Covid vaccine formed a new blood group named ER. It seems the woman in the video made the claim based on recent research by Bristol’s School of Biochemistry and NHSBT’s International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL). This research found three known but genetically uncharacterized antigens that did not fit into any known blood group system. While performing their experiment, researchers could establish Er as a new blood group system by studying Piezo 1 protein.
