This video is from 2014 when football fans disrupted a minute’s silence to the Gresford Mining Disaster during the Chester v Wrexham derby.
Tributes poured in from around the world following the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, who took her last breath at the Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8. From brands to celebrities, thousands shared photos and videos, paying their respects to the English monarch.
One such post is a video that supposedly shows a minute’s silence being observed at the Wembley Stadium — that is rudely interrupted. All of a sudden, people got angry and started shouting. Someone in the crowd even lobbed a flare. People shared the video on Twitter with captions like, “Minute’s silence for the Queen at Wembley before England vs Germany”.

AFWA found that this video is from 2014, and is not related to the English Royal Family at all.

On reverse searching the frames of the viral video, we found a 2019 YouTube video entitled, “Minute silence interrupted, Chester vs Wrexham (bootlegger)”. It was the same clip.
The video’s description listed the original source that landed us on the YouTube channel “Bootlegger”, which had shared the video log of the match where the incident actually happened in 2014. The viral video is only a small part of the almost hour-long vlog.
A news report about this incident stated that on September 22, 2014, a minute of silence was held prior to the kick-off of a Chester FC-Wrexham AFC football match at the Swansway Chester Stadium to mark 80 years of the 1934 Gresford Mining Disaster that claimed the lives of 266 miners. However, Chester FC fans interrupted the silence by mocking a Wrexham supporter’s tragic death. These fans were later banned from watching matches at the stadium for 30 years.
It’s noteworthy that following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, there have been reports of similar incidents already. During a Europa Football League match between Arsenal and Zurich, a minute’s silence during half-time was interrupted with boos and jeers on September 8. This video, however, does not show that.
We also looked up if there was an England-Germany match at the Wembley Stadium as claimed. According to the stadium’s website, it is scheduled for September 26, 2022. This completely dismisses what was being claimed.
