An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a photo of actress Meryl Streep riding the subway after she was called “too ugly” for a film role. Verdict: Misleading While Streep did say she had been called “too ugly” for a role in “King Kong,” the rest of the story is fabricated, and the photo has no relation to the incident. Fact Check: The Facebook post, which garnered over 850 reactions, shows a picture of a young Streep riding the subway. Below the image is what looks like a post from Streep’s Facebook page describing how she had been deemed “too ugly” for a part in “King Kong.” “This was me on my way home from an audition for King Kong where I was told I was too ‘ugly’ for the part,” the alleged screen grab reads. The purported post concludes by stating, “I took a deep breath and said, ‘I’m sorry you think I’m too ugly for your film but you’re just one opinion in a sea of thousands and I’m off to find a kinder tide.'” Part of the story depicted in the post is true. In a January 2015 interview with Graham Norton, Streep explained a story of her audition for a role in “King Kong” with producer Dino De Laurentiis. The actress said Laurentiis told his son, Federico, “Why do you bring me this ugly thing?” in Italian. Streep, who also speaks Italian, claimed she replied in Italian, “I understand what you’re saying. I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough.” There is no evidence of Streep telling the rest of the alleged story included in the post, as the actress does not post on any social media platforms. A reverse image search revealed the photo of Streep had been taken by Ted Thai in 1981 as part of the LIFE Picture Collection, according to LIFE. The remake of “King Kong” was released in 1976, five years prior to the photo taken of Streep, as can be seen on the movie’s IMDB page. Streep has also won three Academy Awards, not 18, according to the actress’ IMDB page.
