  • Fact Check: Russian train bombing? No, this is an old video of a gas pipeline blast An old video of an explosion in a gas pipeline was falsely linked to the twin train bombing in Russia. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is an old video of a gas pipeline explosion that took place in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, back in March 2023. A freight train carrying fuel reportedly caught fire on November 29, while travelling through the Severomuysky Tunnel on the Baikal Amur Mainline, in Buryatia, Russia. A second explosion hours later reportedly hit another train carrying fuel while travelling over the nearby Devil’s Bridge. According to Ukrainian media, the twin train bombing was a sabotage attack by the Security Service of Ukraine, aimed to disrupt a railroad line that serves as a key conduit for trade between Russia and China. Now a video of a huge fire allegedly from the train bombings in Russia has gone viral. The clip shows people witnessing the flames blazing at a distance. One person shared the video on Facebook writing, “Russia's main link to China 'paralysed' after tunnel 'sabotage' an explosion occurred in the Severomuysky railway tunnel in Bashkortostan during the passage of a fuel train, leading to the blockage of the tunnel and the suspension of over ten freight trains.” The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this is an old video of a gas pipeline explosion in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Oblast back in March 2023. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a media report containing a screenshot of the viral video. Per the report, there was an explosion at a gas pipeline in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia. Reportedly, part of the Yamburg-Yelets 1 gas pipeline caught fire during repairs in the district of Pelym. However, casualties or disruption to supplies were not reported. Another video of the incident, shot from a different angle, was shared by Daily Global on March 30. We then found several news reports about this incident. According to Reuters, depressurisation of the Yamburg-Elets gas pipeline occurred near the village of Pelym on March 29. The gas pipeline section was then turned off for repairs, during which it caught fire. The head of the local administration, Shahid Aliyev, confirmed to Russian media outlets that there were no people at the scene and hence, no casualties. The reports also carried another video of the explosion that was shot by a witness. It is thus clear that this video shows an old explosion in a gas pipeline and has no links to the recent twin train bombing in Russia.
