Vishvas News (New Delhi). On March 5, India faced Australia in the semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy. India triumphed over the Aussies, securing their spot in the final. However, it wasn’t just the win that captured attention—Mohammad Shami’s photo sipping an energy drink quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions. While many applauded Shami for staying focused on his game, others, including a cleric from Bareilly, criticised him for not observing a fast, stirring a wave of criticism online. Now a post is going viral on social media comparing Shami with South African cricketer Hashim Amla, claiming that Amla scored a triple hundred against England, while fasting during Ramdan.
Vishvas News investigated the post and found it to be false. Though Amla scored a 311 knock during Ramdan, he confirmed to the reporters that he was not fasting.
What is going viral?
On March 4, 2025, X user ‘Mohsin Bhat’ shared the viral photo of Shami sipping energy drink with the caption, “After seeing this, I realized that it was Hashim Amla who scored an unbeaten 311 runs against England while fasting. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, you should remain steadfast in your faith.”

Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords and found that South African cricketer Hashim Amla scored a triple hundred in a Test Match against England at The Oval in July 2012.
Further refining our keyword search, we came across a story published on Guardian.com on July 22, 2012. According to the news report, Amla was not fasting on the match day. The story quoted him as saying “Because I’m travelling away from home I don’t have to fast. So I haven’t been fasting. But I will make it up when I get home.”
A news report on sacricketmag.com also mentions that Amla wasn’t fasting during his 311 knock.
We contacted Dainik Jagran’s sports editor Abhishek Tripathi to verify the viral claim. He confirmed that multiple reports have stated that Amla did not observe the fast during his 311 knock. However, he did not drink or eat anything on the field as a sign of respect for those fasting.
Finally, we scanned the X account that shared the viral claim and found that the user has over 300 followers.
