  • Fact Check: This old video from Spain DOES NOT show fans celebrating Croatia's win against Brazil A video showing a large crowd celebrating on the street was shared by many who claimed it showed Croatian fans celebrating the football squad's victory. India Today checks the truth behind the video. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video does not show Croatian fans celebrating their football team’s win over Brazil. It’s from Pamplona, Spain, shot during the famous San Fermin festival. Croatia defeated Brazil 4-2 in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on December 9. Following this, a video showing a large crowd celebrating on the street was shared by many who claimed it showed Croatian fans celebrating the football squad’s victory. The archived version of such a tweet can be seen here. AFWA’s investigation found that the video is not linked to Croatia’s recent win at the FIFA World Cup in any way. This video is from Spain and is likely from 2018. AFWA Probe Reverse-searching screengrabs from the video led us to the same video uploaded to Imgur in July 2018. The video was titled “Croatia is ready to go.” The person who shared the video, however, wrote in an update: “Edit: As pointed out by other imgurians this is not Croatia but Spain. Sorry about the incorrect info.” When we checked the comments, we saw that many had pointed out that the video was from Spain’s Pamplona, and showed the San Fermin Festival. The San Fermin Festival is a nine-day-long celebration held in July every year, historically rooted in the city of Pamplona, Navarre, in northern Spain. We searched for the festival on YouTube and found many such videos from 2018 that looked similar to the viral clip. A video titled in French, “Pamplona Festivities 2018: The Gaitas play in the heart of the crowd,” was uploaded on July 6, 2018, to the official YouTube channel of Sud Ouest, a French daily. We came across another video of the same performance shot from a different angle. It can be seen below. We compared these photos with the viral video and found many similarities between them, such as a banner that read “Ohlala! Peluqueria”. Thus, it is clear that the viral video does not show Croatian fans celebrating their football team’s win over Brazil. And while we could not independently verify the exact date on which the video was shot, it is clear that it is from an annual Spanish festival.
