The video is from Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala’s final prayer ceremony. It has nothing to do with farmers’ protests.
Are Muslim men disguising themselves as Sikh farmers to join the ongoing farmers’ protest? This allegation is widely shared alongside a video of a Muslim man taking off his skull cap and in its stead donning a Sikh turban in a large gathering.
An X user wrote, “Abdul in the guise of Sikh. That's the reality behind farmer protests 2024 Disgusting!” The word “Abdul” is often used on social media as a euphemism for Muslim men.
India Today Fact Check found that the video is from Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala’s final prayer ceremony. It is completely unrelated to the ongoing “Delhi Chalo” protests.
Our Probe
The viral video contained text written in Gurumukhi. Using Google Lens, we translated it. It reads: “Brother Sidhu Moosewala’s final prayer.” Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was murdered on May 29, 2022, near his village in Punjab.
A subsequent reverse image search with relevant keywords led us to a Facebook post from June 12, 2022, shared by a page called “Sardarian Trust Punjab”. The post contained images of the same man in the viral video. We also noticed a poster of Moosewala in the background, which could be seen in the viral video as well. The post read, “Moosewala’s final prayer - Sardariaan Trust put up Turban stall, Both Hindus and Muslims tied turbans.”
Upon going through Sardarian Trust Punjab’s Facebook page, we found the viral video. It was shared on June 10, 2022. Moosewala’s final prayer ceremony was held on June 8, 2022, in Punjab’s Mansa district, the singer’s hometown. Thousands of his fans reportedly gathered for the ceremony.
Notably, the same viral video was also widely shared in 2023 during the wrestlers’ protest in Delhi with false allegations. India Today Malayalam debunked this at the time.
Thus, it’s clear that a video from Sidhu Moosewala’s final prayer ceremony is being falsely linked to the second wave of the farmers’ protests.
