  • Fact Check: This video shows a 2021 brawl in Dublin, NOT recent riots in Irish capital India Today found that the viral video shows a 2021 brawl involving some men harassing a pregnant woman and the waiting staff at a restaurant. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is from 2021 and shows a brawl involving some men harassing a pregnant woman, unrelated to the recent rioting. Riots erupted in Dublin's city centre after a knife attack left four people injured. Rumours about the perpetrator's nationality fueled tensions online, consequently leading to far-right groups causing a rampage in the city. Amid this unrest, a video went viral on social media, purportedly showing waiters in the Irish capital fighting “fascists” from the streets during the recent turmoil. A Facebook user sharing the viral video, wrote, "You're watching Dublin waiters kicking fascists off the streets of our city. This is how we do it, comrades. Let's speak to the bastards in the language they understand." An archived version of the post can be seen here. India Today found that the viral video is two years old and unrelated to the recent disturbances in Dublin. OUR PROBE Running a reverse image search on keyframes of the video led us to media reports from June 2021. These reports detailed a fight that occurred on South William Street between restaurant staff and four young men. The clash resulted in injuries to one of the waiters when one of the gang members swung a bottle, leading to the arrest of three men for rampaging in central Dublin. A DublinLive, an anonymous source said that the fight ensued when a group pestered a pregnant woman, blowing cannabis smoke in her face. The Irish Times reported that Ryan Dowling, a 20-year-old Dublin man with 16 previous convictions, received a 10-month prison sentence for his role in the brawl. The altercation began when a couple celebrating their anniversary was harassed by a group of men, including Dowling. The restaurant staff intervened, leading to the group throwing furniture and beer cans at them. Thus, it’s evident that an old video showing a brawl between unruly young men and restaurant staff, flared by harassment of a pregnant woman, is being falsely linked with the recent riots in the Irish capital.
