India Today Fact Check
This is an old video that has been on the internet since as early as March 2021.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 jolted parts of Pakistan on January 29. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the quake’s depth was 150 km and its epicentre was in Tajikistan. There were no reports of loss of life and property as of yet.
Meanwhile, a video has gone viral on social media that allegedly shows this recent Pakistan quake. The video shows the interiors of a room and furniture shaking vigorously.
Indian-American entrepreneur Gurbaksh Singh Chahal shared this video on Twitter and wrote: “WATCH: #BNNPakistan Reports. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a 6.3-magnitude #earthquake jolted Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Sunday afternoon, forcing people out of their homes as they felt the tremors.” The archived version of this post can be seen here.
AFWA found that this video is not related to the recent earthquake, and has been present on the internet since as early as March 2021.
AFWA Probe
Upon reverse-searching keyframes of the viral video, we found that many people had shared it on January 8 and 9 this year. Those sharing it at the time stated that the video showed an earthquake in Vanuatu, a South Pacific Ocean nation made up of about 80 islands.
However, on searching further, we found a slightly longer and black-and-white version of the same video on Twitter from March 5, 2021. At the top right corner of the video, one can see the date mentioned as March 5, 2021. This video appears to be CCTV footage.
On comparing the keyframes of this video with the viral video, one can easily notice the similarities between them.
When we reverse-searched this black-and-white version of the video, we found it in a Daily Mail report dated March 4, 2021. However, this report has been deleted now. Its archived version can be seen here. This report was about an earthquake that occurred in New Zealand. This video was also shared on YouTube on March 5, 2021, as an earthquake in New Zealand.
While we could not independently verify the exact time and location of the viral video, it is certain that it is not related to the recent earthquake in Pakistan.
