Listen to Story
A video making the rounds on social media shows the police arresting people, seemingly from a residential area. A huge crowd can be seen present at the spot as police nab two men, while some can be heard arguing in the background.
Those sharing the clip claimed that the video showed police arresting Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia from their homes, following the controversial joke on the “India’s Got Latent” show. Its archive can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found this video has no links to the ongoing controversy. It is from 2023 and shows the police detaining two men over a parking dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida.
OUR PROBE
Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video led us to a Times of India report dated August 15, 2023. According to it, the video in question was from a residential society in Greater Noida, where a clash broke out between two groups over parking issues.
Per other news reports, the incident took place on August 13, 2023, at the Flora Heritage housing society in Greater Noida West. Clashes erupted between two groups after a parking dispute. As the fight escalated, police reached the spot, but the residents reportedly attacked the cops as well. Following this, two people were taken into police custody. Some women also tried to stop the police from arresting the men.
The police arrested Daya Shankar and Hriday Shankar, and also filed cases against other unidentified people for obstructing them during the arrest.
At the time, the Gautam Buddha Nagar Police made an X post regarding the incident.
It’s noteworthy that the Supreme Court granted interim protection from arrest to Ranveer Allahbadia in connection with the FIRs registered against him over his objectionable remarks on February 18. The apex court, however, restrained Ranveer from doing any other shows for the time being, asking him to cooperate with the investigation.
Thus, it’s clear that a 2023 video of police action in Greater Noida was falsely linked to the ongoing “India’s Got Latent” row.
