  • Last Updated on July 4, 2023 by Dr. Shikha Shiromani Quick Take A social media post claims that combining cumin and ginger boiled in water in lemon when consumed after meals twice a day will make you lose weight. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim The caption of a Facebook reel reads, “ #61dayschallenge Reduce pregnancy weight and belly fat..in two months you will lose 8-10kgs ..no dieting.. No exercise.” The video shown displays the method to prepare the drink. It reaches 16.1k likes and more than 1.3k shares. Fact Check Is it possible to naturally lose fat without exercise and diet? No. It is not possible to lose fat without exercise and diet. Losing fat is a multifaceted approach. If someone wants to lose fat, they must find out the cause of weight gain: inflammation, leaky gut, hormone imbalance, toxins, low metabolism, intake of medicines like steroids, etc. After the cause is identified, lifestyle and dietary modifications are done accordingly to lose fat. Also, it is possible to naturally reduce fat naturally through physical activity and a well-balanced calorie-deficit diet. Patients wishing to lose weight should participate in physical activity and caloric restriction to improve their chances of burning fat and losing weight. Lastly, it is not possible to reduce fat in a few days naturally. It is a gradual process that takes a lot of effort and time. Voomika Mukherjee, Health & Nutrition Life Coach shares her views saying, “Belly fat is the visceral fat surrounding the liver and other organs in the abdomen, close to the portal vein that carries blood to the liver. This fat can harm the body, but proper measures can be taken to reduce belly fat. To reduce belly fat, one needs to follow a well-planned routine which includes 1) Getting Enough Sleep: Sleep deprivation leads to an increase in ghrelin levels and a lowering of the leptin levels in the body, which is responsible for making you hungry. It is also responsible for metabolic and endocrine alterations and a reduction in glucose tolerance. And hence affects various aspects of one’s health, including belly fat accumulation. 2) Drink Enough Water: There is a positive correlation between water consumption and weight loss. Studies show that water helps the body metabolize stored fat efficiently. 3) Workout Regularly: Exercising daily helps with body-weight management. Exercises that specifically target the abdominal area would go a long way in helping reduce belly fat. 4) Track Your Calories: Eating the right food is central to losing belly fat. It is ideal to follow a well-thought-out diet planned as per your needs and requirements. Hence losing fat without taking care of your body is neither advisable nor possible.” Can the combination of cumin, ginger and lemon make you lose weight without diet and exercise modifications? Not exactly. There is some evidence that cumin, ginger, and lemon may help with weight loss individually but there is no concrete scientific evidence to prove that this concoction will lead to weight loss without exercise and dietary modifications. Cumin, ginger, and lemon are ingredients that have been associated with weight loss, but it’s important to understand that they alone cannot cause significant weight loss. Let’s look at each ingredient individually: 1. Cumin: Cumin is a spice commonly used and has been associated to have some potential benefits for weight loss. Some studies suggest that cumin may help improve digestion, increase metabolic rate, and reduce body fat. However, the effects are likely to be modest. It must be considered as a complementary addition to an overall healthy diet and lifestyle. 2. Ginger: It is known for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and aiding digestion. It may slightly increase metabolism and reduce appetite, which could potentially support weight management. A meta-analysis done in 2017 says that “Supplementation with ginger significantly decreased body weight (BW), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and insulin resistance.” However, similar to cumin, ginger alone is unlikely to have a significant impact on weight loss without incorporating other lifestyle changes. 3. Lemon: It is mostly associated with detoxification and weight loss due to its high vitamin C content and potential diuretic effects. Drinking lemon water can be a refreshing and low-calorie beverage choice that may contribute to hydration and support overall health. However, it solely will not lead to substantial weight loss without other healthy lifestyle modifications. However, it must be noted that these spices are not a magic bullet for weight loss. They can help you lose weight if you are following a healthy diet and exercise plan, but they will not work on their own. Dietitian Kamna Chauhan sheds light on this by stating, “No, only consuming a combination of cumin, ginger and lemon cannot help you to lose weight without diet and exercise modification because the algorithm of healthy weight is 80% Diet and 20% Exercise. In diet, our body needs all the nutrients in a particular amount to function properly and healthily. When we go for weight loss we always have to be consistent and have to take positive changes in our lifestyle. Cumin, ginger and lemon give you satisfaction as cumin contain flavonoids which work as antioxidants, Ginger contain a high amount of vitamin and mineral, and lemon contain vitamin C and fibre, due to these nutrients our body feels relaxed and gives a result in weight loss but only this is not enough, our body needs other nutrients also like 45-60% Carbohydrate, 15-20% Protein, and 20-25% Fat of the total Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) for healthy weight loss plus exercise also needed to burn out the extra calories. So the combination of both diet with packed nutrients and exercise is needed for healthy weight loss.” When it comes to weight loss, it’s important to focus on a holistic approach that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, portion control, and overall healthy lifestyle habits. These ingredients can be incorporated as part of a nutritious diet, but relying solely on them for weight loss is unlikely to yield significant results. It’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice on weight loss strategies based on your specific needs and goals.
