| - A long-standing rumor claiming a "Bluey" movie titled "The Bluey Movie" is circulating online, most recently with the mention of a January 2025 release date.
For example, in late November 2024, a Snopes reader emailed us with the question, "Is there a 'Bluey' movie releasing in January 2025? There are mixed reports."
Our search for answers located plenty of clues to the origins of this specific claim.
What Is 'Bluey'?
"Bluey" is a beloved Australian children's animated TV series that follows the imaginative and playful antics of a blue heeler puppy and her family. The series is available in the U.S. on the Disney+ streaming service.
Disney+ described the show's brief episodes — each lasting around 8 minutes — as aiming to take a "funny and honest look at modern family life" while celebrating "how imaginative play helps shape healthy children." Travel + Leisure has called the series a "global sensation."
Ludo Studio produces "Bluey" in Queensland, Australia. The production company's website and the show's IMDb.com page both display awards and nominations for its efforts. We emailed the studio's staff to ask about this rumor and will update our story if we receive a response.
Is a 'Bluey' Movie Releasing in January 2025?
In short, the answer is no. While a "Bluey" movie might release in future years — just as any movie about anything might release in future years — the claim of a full-length feature film coming out in January 2025 is unfounded. Ludo Studio has not publicly announced any plans for a movie. Further, the IMDb.com page for series creator Joe Brumm listed no information about an upcoming "Bluey" film.
We based our rating of unfounded not only on a complete lack of verifiable data but also the evident origins of the rumor. This claim stemmed from various unofficial online pages and articles, as well as misleading Google search results generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
Misleading Generative AI Google Search Results
A Google search for "'Bluey' movie January 2025" displayed an AI-generated answer above traditional search results. The Google Gemini AI platform produced the "AI Overview" answer, reading, "The 'Bluey' movie is scheduled for release on January 1, 2025. The animated family film is about a 6-year-old cattle dog named Bluey and his family. It's a heartwarming adventure that celebrates family bonds, imagination, and the joy of discovering life through a child's eyes."
Similarly, a Google search for "Is a 'Bluey' moving coming out" provided the "AI Overview" answer, "Yes, a 'Bluey' movie is coming, and it's scheduled for release on January 1, 2025." The search also showed a "'Bluey' movie poster" — but not a poster for a "Bluey" movie — simply inspired by the season-two episode titled, "Featherwand."
Both of the Google searches displayed a small link icon leading to the source of the generated information on the Plex.tv website. The linked page (archived) on Plex.tv showed an unofficial movie poster reading, "Bluey: The Movie." The poster displayed logos for 20th Century Studios and BBC Kids. Next to the poster, the page displayed the different title, "The Bluey Movie," as well as the same Jan. 1, 2025, date and plot description appearing earlier in the Google search results.
The person or people who created the Plex.tv page gathered the poster and other information from unofficial sources. We reached out by email to ask representatives of Plex.tv about the page and will update this article if we receive an answer.
'Bluey' Movie Wiki Pages
Wiki entries published on several websites provided information about a supposed future "Bluey" movie. However, none of the entries showed genuine information. Instead, the wiki contributions simply displayed ideas and fan fiction — not facts.
For example, the Fanon Kingdom Wiki hosted on Fandom.com (archived) said that "The Bluey Movie" premiered at Universal Studios Hollywood on May 10, 2024. According to the entry, Oscar-winning director James Cameron, fellow Oscar-winning music composer Hans Zimmer, actor Millie Bobbie Brown and Oscar-winning actors Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep all contributed to the film. The website's Bluey Fanon Wiki also displayed the same names. None of this was true.
Meanwhile, the Disney Fanon Wiki (archived) on Fandom.com claimed Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios produced "The Bluey Movie," and that the film released in 2023. The website's Leonardo's Ideas Community further claimed that a live-action "Bluey" movie filmed with Miley Cyrus and already released (in the future) on May 16, 2025, using the words "was released." All of these claims were made up.
According to the Idea Wiki on Fandom.com, a user named Souper1999 uploaded the unofficial "Bluey: The Movie" poster — the same one appearing on Plex.tv — on Oct. 6, 2022. That was the last day the user showed any activity on the website. Whether they created the poster and whether this was its first online appearanceremainsn unclear. Other posters shared on DeviantArt.com and Reddit were also nothing more than fan creations.
Fake 'First Look,' Misleading Headline and More
Our research located numerous other online pages showing content that might fool users about the past or future existence of a "Bluey" movie.
For example, beginning chronologically with Dec. 9, 2023, the SLUURP YouTube channel posted a video titled, "The Bluey Movie (2024) | FIRST LOOK." However, the video did not show an official "first look" at a future "Bluey" feature-length film.
On April 10, 2024, Deadline published an interview with Brumm about the lengthier-than-normal, 28-minute episode titled, "The Sign." The story read, "I'm loving going longer on 'The Sign,' and I'd love to try to go longer — I definitely would not rule that out,' he said. 'That's why I'm very interested to see how 'The Sign' goes down with the audience. Obviously it's four times as long as a normal episode. Will the audience accept a stint with a longer story?'"
On the next day, the Disney fan blog Inside the Magic reported the misleading headline, "Report: Official Bluey Movie Coming to Disney+." Despite the headline, the author wrote in the story they could "neither confirm nor deny the reality of a movie based on the beloved blue heeler from Brisbane is in the works."
On April 29, Woman's Day published the speculative headline, "Bluey could be hitting the big screen with a movie featuring huge Aussie names." The article further reported, "In fact, beloved Aussie superstars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are said to be scrambling to have a role, no matter how small, in the animated series." Reddit users discussed the unsubstantiated rumor on the r/bluey subreddit.
Months later, the Miracle Charm YouTube channel published on Nov. 13 a video titled, "A New Bluey Movie Is Coming Soon!" Despite the declarative title, the first sentence of the clip's text description only said a film "could" be in production.
On Nov. 22, the Facebook group Adult Bluey Memes & More hosted a post purportedly showing another "Bluey: The Movie" poster. The user mentioned the year 2026 and said to "imagine what a year it could be," displaying an image of numerous potential sequels to other animated children's franchises. In other words, the image simply expressed the user's hopes.
A commenter remarked under the Facebook post in capital letters, "THERE IS NO 'BLUEY' MOVIE. STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION ONLINE, AND STOP BELIEVING MISINFORMATION ONLINE. THANK YOU, HAVE A GOOD DAY."
