The clash took place during a meeting of lawyers in Aleppo. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This clip is from August 2024 and has nothing to do with Syria's newly appointed interim government. The clash took place during a meeting of lawyers in Afrin, Aleppo. Following the toppling of the Bashar al-Assad government, Syrian rebels appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the caretaker prime minister of the country. As per a report in Outlook magazine, the transitional government in Syria will remain until March 1, 2025. Following his appointment, Bashir chaired a meeting in Damascus to discuss the transfer of portfolios and institutions. Now a video of a fistfight between people in a public hall has gone viral on social media with the claim that the brawl broke out during the first official meeting held by the newly appointed Syrian government. This video was widely circulated on X and Facebook. Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is from August 2024 and has nothing to do with Syria's interim government. The clash took place during a meeting of lawyers in Aleppo. Our Probe A reverse image search of the video led us to a Facebook post from August 10. The post featuring the viral video had the Arabic hashtag “Free Lawyers Association”. This makes it clear that the video could not be from the recent meeting of the interim Syrian government. We also found an Arabic report about the viral video published by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The report published on August 10 said that a fistfight broke out inside a branch of Gaziantep University in Afrin, Aleppo governorate, between a delegation headed by the Minister of Justice in the “Syrian Interim Government” and lawyers of the “Free Lawyers Council”. The Free Lawyers Council had reportedly accused the minister of creating divisions within the Bar Association. A video report published by the Syrian news outlet Syrian TV said there were disagreements between the lawyers and the Syrian interim government that led to this brawl. Thus, we can conclude that the video has nothing to do with the new Syrian government. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
