Quick Take
A social media post claims that turmeric and coconut oil can cure cavities naturally. Our fact check reveals this claim is false.
The Claim
A Pinterest post claims that mixing turmeric powder, coconut oil, clove essential oil, and sea salt creates a “powerful tooth mask.” The post implies that this paste can naturally reverse cavities and heal tooth decay.
Fact Check
Can cavities be reversed with natural remedies?
No, natural remedies cannot reverse cavities. Cavities form when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that wear away the enamel, the hard outer layer of the tooth. Once a cavity develops, it cannot be reversed with home remedies. Only a dentist can remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill it to stop further damage.
While turmeric and coconut oil may help reduce bacteria in the mouth, they cannot rebuild the tooth’s lost structure.
Fluoride is the only substance proven to strengthen weakened enamel, but it cannot repair a cavity that has already formed. When decay reaches deeper layers of the tooth, fillings or other dental procedures (like, RCT) are necessary.
We interviewed Dr Sanjeev Bhankhur, BDS, MPH, AIIMS, New Delhi, for his take on home remedies for dental cavities. He states, “Many people are drawn to natural remedies for oral health, and I understand why—who wouldn’t want to explore a holistic approach? However, it’s crucial to remember that these remedies cannot heal cavities. The enamel does not regenerate on its own. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, combined with routine dental check-ups, is the best way to prevent cavities and maintain a healthy smile. Embrace natural products as part of your care, but always prioritise professional treatment when needed.”
We also reached out to Dr Snigdha, BDS, MDS, Vananchal Dental College and Hospital, Garhwa, Jharkhand, for her expert insights on natural remedies for dental cavities. She says, “While natural ingredients like turmeric and coconut oil can contribute to better oral health, they don’t replace the need for professional dental treatment. Cavities occur due to bacteria and acid that damage the enamel. Once a cavity forms, only a dentist can effectively treat it. Think of these natural remedies as supporting actors in your dental care routine—they can help maintain gum health and reduce plaque, but they can’t fix the damage caused by decay.”
Additionally, we have come across another interesting claim that says wisdom tooth extraction can harm digestive health. However, this claim lacks scientific evidence.
Do turmeric and coconut oil have benefits for oral health?
Yes, but turmeric and coconut oil won’t cure cavities. Turmeric, which contains curcumin, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that may support gum health and help control plaque. Studies suggest it can reduce gingivitis-related inflammation and be used alongside regular brushing. Coconut oil also has antibacterial effects, and practices like oil pulling may help reduce some bacteria. Some people also claim that coconut oil pulling can actually whiten your teeth, though evidence is limited.
Turmeric products, such as mouthwashes or gels, can be beneficial for added gum care, but always consult your dentist first. For effective plaque prevention, fluoride toothpaste remains essential.
While these ingredients may freshen breath and reduce mild inflammation, they cannot repair cavities or treat the underlying issue of enamel erosion due to bacteria. They can support general oral health but are not substitutes for proper dental care.
Can clove oil and salt help with tooth decay?
No, they may relieve pain but don’t treat decay. Clove oil, which contains eugenol, can numb tooth pain, and saltwater rinses can reduce bacteria and help keep the mouth clean. However, these effects are only temporary and do not address the decayed area. For actual treatment, dental fillings, crowns, or root canals are necessary depending on the severity of the cavity.
While clove oil and salt can help manage pain or reduce inflammation, they won’t reverse damage to the tooth. Attempting to treat cavities with these alone can lead to worsening decay.
What’s the best way to prevent cavities?
Good oral hygiene and regular dental care are essential. Preventing cavities is simpler than treating them. Brushing and flossing daily, using fluoride toothpaste, and limiting sugar intake are key steps to protect your teeth from decay. Regular dental check-ups allow for early detection, and treatments like fluoride applications or sealants offer added protection against cavities.
THIP Media Take
The claim that a turmeric, coconut oil, clove oil, and sea salt mask can reverse cavities or heal tooth decay is false. These ingredients might support general oral hygiene but cannot restore damaged teeth or cure cavities. For oral health issues, always consult a professional to avoid making your dental problems worse. Proper oral care and timely dental treatment remain the most effective approaches for maintaining a healthy smile.
