  • Last Updated on December 12, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick take A video posted by a LinkedIn account holder shows numerous people squeezing bitter gourd (karela) juice by their legs, audibly expressing the bitterness they can taste on their tongues. We fact checked it and found this claim to be FALSE. The claim A LinkedIn account by the name Limesh Parekh has posted a video with the caption “Naturopathy at its best. If you mix neem and bitter gourd raw and grind it like a chutney and pour it on a plate like this and stand with bare feet, the tongue will taste bitter in a few minutes. That is, its essence enters the body like osmotic diffusion. It is said to be a solution for sugar, BP, cholesterol, and kidney problems. A person who did this for half an hour for three days says that insulin injections are no longer necessary…” Fact Check What compounds in bitter gourd juice are believed to affect diabetes? Bitter melon (karela) juice is believed to impact diabetes due to the presence of bioactive compounds. Notably, charantin, vicine, and polypeptide-p are thought to contribute to its potential antidiabetic effects. These compounds may help regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose absorption in the intestines. However, further research is needed to fully understand the specific mechanisms and effectiveness of these compounds in managing diabetes. Is there a scientific research supporting the claim? No. There is no substantial scientific evidence supporting the idea that soaking feet in bitter gourd (karela) juice is beneficial for managing diabetes. Bitter gourd has been studied for its potential antidiabetic properties, primarily in relation to its consumption or extract intake, rather than topical application. Applying bitter gourd juice directly to the feet is not a commonly recommended or studied practice for managing diabetes. Diabetes management typically involves lifestyle modifications, such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, medication (if prescribed), and monitoring blood glucose levels. It’s crucial to note that while some natural remedies may have potential benefits, they should not replace conventional medical treatments or advice. What is osmotic diffusion? Osmotic diffusion, or osmosis, is the movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher concentration. This biological process aims to equalise solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane. The membrane allows the passage of water but restricts certain solutes. Osmosis is crucial in various biological processes, such as nutrient absorption in cells and the regulation of water balance in living organisms. What is osmotic diffusion in skin ? Osmotic diffusion in the skin involves the movement of water across cell membranes to maintain proper hydration. The skin, being a semi-permeable barrier, allows water to move in and out through osmosis. For example, when you apply a moisturiser containing humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, these substances attract and hold water, promoting osmotic diffusion. Similarly, soaking in a bath can hydrate the skin as water moves into skin cells. Osmotic processes in the skin are crucial for maintaining moisture balance and overall skin health. Can sensations or substances applied to the skin be perceived on the tongue? No. Sensations or substances applied to the skin are generally not perceived on the tongue. The sensation of touch or the application of substances is typically specific to the area where it occurs. Different parts of the body have distinct receptors and nerve pathways that transmit signals to the brain, allowing us to perceive sensations in a localised manner. For example, the skin has receptors for touch, pressure, temperature, and pain, while the tongue has taste buds that detect different flavours. These sensory systems operate independently, and information from one area of the body does not cross over to another in terms of perception. Can water absorb in the skin and reach the tongue? No, water applied to the skin does not directly reach the tongue through absorption. The skin acts as a barrier, and water absorption is limited to the outermost layer, the stratum corneum. This absorption is primarily for hydration and doesn’t involve water reaching internal organs or other distant parts like the tongue. The sensations and perceptions related to water or substances applied to the skin are processed locally and do not transmit directly to internal organs such as the tongue, which has its own set of receptors for taste perception. General Physician Dr Atul Kumar Vashistha elaborates saying that, “There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that consistently squashing bitter gourd (karela) with feet has any direct benefits for managing diabetes. Diabetes management typically involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and medication as prescribed by a healthcare professional. While bitter gourd is sometimes suggested for its potential blood sugar-lowering properties, the method of preparation (such as squashing with feet) is not a recognized or proven strategy for diabetes management. It’s important for individuals with diabetes to consult with their healthcare providers for evidence-based guidance on managing their condition.” Dr Annusuiya Gohil, BAMS, cleared the point, ”Bitter gourd is dominant in Kattu (pungent) and Tikta (bitter) Rasa or flavour as mentioned in Ayurveda text. Thus, it has the ability to counter balance Madhur (sweet) Rasa. But it is no where mentioned in Ayurveda that it’s outer application can be helpful in treatment of Diabetes. In fact it is not even scientifically proven and no studies have been done on the same.”
