Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya recently announced his candidature for the office of Prime Minister of Canada following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. Now, a video purportedly showing Arya speaking in Kannada has gone viral on social media platforms.
Multiple users shared the 57 seconds video alleging that Chandra Arya spoke in Kannada after filing his nomination for the Canadian Prime Minister. However, Newschecker found the video to be old.

Fact Check/Verification
On skimming through the comment section of various posts carrying the viral footage, we noticed a user pointing out that it was an old video.
We then looked up relevant keywords on Google which yielded a report by Business Today, dated May 20, 2022. “Canadian Member of Parliament, Chandra Arya, spoke in his mother tongue Kannada in Parliament. The video has now gone viral with netizens lauding and praising him. He claimed that it is the first time Kannada is spoken in any parliament in the world outside of India,” it stated.
Subsequent investigation led us to a report by Indian Express from May 2022, carrying the same footage of Arya addressing the Canadian Parliament in Kannada language. “Canadian MP of Indian origin, Chandra Arya, spoke in his mother tongue Kannada in the Canadian Parliament on Thursday. Arya took to Twitter to share a clip of his experience,” its description stated.

Further, the video was also shared by Arya on his official X account on May 20, 2022. “I spoke in my mother tongue (first language) Kannada in the Canadian parliament. This beautiful language has a long history and is spoken by about 50 million people. This is the first time Kannada is spoken in any parliament in the world outside of India,” he stated in the post.

Hence, an old video has been falsely shared to claim that Chandra Arya spoke in Kannada after filing nomination for Canadian Prime Minister’s office.
