Quick Take
A social media post claims that Dolo 650 is the world’s most dangerous medicine. We fact checked this claim and found that it is false.
The Claim
An Instagram reel claims that Dolo 650 (paracetamol) is the “most harmful medicine in the world.” It says researchers from 40 countries have called it the worst medicine and that it should never be used. The post also criticises its common use, especially for children, comparing it to giving out sweets.
Fact Check
Where is Dolo 650 or paracetamol used?
Dolo 650 or paracetamol is used to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain. Doctors recommend it for common problems like headaches, body aches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and pain after surgery. It’s also given to lower fever during illnesses like the flu, dengue, or viral infections.
It’s a popular choice because it works well for most people, is affordable, and has fewer side effects than some other painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin. It works slightly faster on an empty stomach; however, this can lead to gastric issues. Paracetamol is safe for both adults and children when taken in the correct dose.
What are the side effects of paracetamol?
Paracetamol is safe when used correctly, but misuse can cause harm. Most people tolerate paracetamol without any issues. However, like any medicine, it can have side effects. This does not mean that paracetamol is the worst drug ever. Common side effects include nausea, rash, or dizziness. Serious side effects are rare but can happen if you take too much.
An overdose of paracetamol can cause liver damage, which may become life-threatening if not treated quickly. Drinking alcohol while taking paracetamol increases this risk. That’s why it’s important to follow the dosage instructions on the label or as prescribed by a doctor.
Has research in 40 countries called paracetamol the world’s worst medicine?
No, there is no evidence to support this claim. Paracetamol is one of the most researched medicines in the world. Health organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) include it on their list of essential medicines because it is safe, affordable, and effective. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics says paracetamol is the safest drug for fever in children if taken in the correct dosage. This is true for all medicines; even in Ayurveda, medicines need to be taken in the correct dosage.
The claim that researchers from 40 countries have labelled it the “worst medicine” does not have any scientific evidence. Such statements seem to be sensationalised and are likely intended to create fear.
We reached out to Dr Kashyap Dakshini, General Physician practicing in Mumbai, for his perspective on the safety of paracetamol. He explains, “Paracetamol is the safest medicine for reducing fever. While other drugs like ibuprofen and NSAIDs also reduce fever, they can cause harm to organs like the stomach, liver, and kidneys if used in high doses or for long periods. NSAIDs should be avoided in people with kidney disease, gastric ulcers, heart failure, or liver disease.”
We connected with Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician from Holy Mission Clinic in New Delhi, for his expert opinion on the safety of paracetamol. He states, “Paracetamol is a widely used and safe medication when taken as recommended. It effectively reduces pain and fever with minimal side effects if used responsibly. Misuse or overdose, however, can lead to serious issues like liver damage, so it’s important to follow the correct dosage and consult a doctor if unsure.”
Should paracetamol be avoided altogether?
No, paracetamol is safe when used responsibly. Paracetamol is one of the safest medicines available for managing pain and fever. It is often the first choice for people who cannot take other painkillers due to stomach problems or allergies. Children, pregnant women, and older adults can also safely use paracetamol under medical supervision.
Avoiding paracetamol completely is unnecessary. Instead, use it responsibly by sticking to the recommended dose. If you are unsure, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
THIP Media Take
The claim that Dolo 650 is the world’s most dangerous medicine is false. Paracetamol is a trusted medicine used by millions of people every day. While misuse or overdose can cause problems, it remains one of the safest and most effective options for pain and fever relief when used correctly. Always rely on accurate medical advice and avoid being misled by unverified claims.
