  • Fact Check: NOT final moments of Titan sub, this video is from a 2021 expedition This video, while shot inside the Titan, was shot during an expedition to the Titanic wreckage made in August 2021. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a 2021 expedition of the submersible. An international group of agencies is reportedly investigating the cause of the June 18 implosion of OceanGate’s Titan submersible that claimed the lives of all five passengers on board. Meanwhile, on social media, many have been sharing a video allegedly shot inside the sub moments before it imploded. The man filming flipped the camera and captured himself on video along with other passengers looking out the sub’s glass window, outside which, the wreckage of RMS Titanic was visible. One of the passengers was a woman. Sharing this video on Twitter, one person wrote, “In the last scene, you can see five people sitting in the submarine. They also made a video of the Titanic, but what do they know that death is waiting for us in the Titanic and they will never return alive.” Archived versions of such posts can be found here and here. India Today found that this video is from a 2021 OceanGate expedition. Our Probe The five men who died in the recent accident included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British businessman Hamish Harding, former French navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet, British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood. There were no women on board. A keyword search on YouTube led us to a video shared by CBS News on June 22. It was an interview with Aaron Newman, an OcreanGate investor and a passenger in a 2021 expedition to see the Titanic. About 45 seconds into the report, we found the video in question. The text on the top left corner read: “Courtesy of Aaron Newman 2021.” Newman is the person who was seen shooting himself and other passengers from inside the sub in the viral video. Apart from the viral clip, other videos from his trip could also be seen in the report. In conversation with CBS news reporter John Dickerson, Newman shared his experience from when he boarded the submersible in August 2021, saw the stern of the Titanic, and made it back. The woman in the viral clip was Dr Bridget Buxton, a marine archaeologist who reportedly worked alongside the Oceangate CEO and travelled to the Titanic wreckage multiple times. We found her in several OceanGate videos and a comparison between the viral video and her appearance in other media can be seen below. Thus, it is clear that an old video from a 2021 Titan expedition was falsely shared as the final moments of the passengers inside the sub before its implosion.
