  • Fact Check: New Scottish head of Pakistani origin took oath in Urdu? No, this video is from 2016 India Today found that the video is from when Yousaf was elected to the Scottish parliament. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is old. It shows Yousaf taking oath as a Member of the Scottish Parliament in 2016. Humza Yousaf was sworn in as Scotland's First Minister on March 29 in a ceremony reportedly blending formal tradition with his Pakistani heritage. The son of first-generation immigrants from Pakistan, the first Muslim to lead a democratic western European nation was reportedly dressed in a black shalwar kameez during his swearing-in. Now, a video of Yousaf taking an oath in Urdu is being circulated on social media. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here, and here. India Today, in its investigation, found that the video is from 2016 when Yousaf was elected to the Scottish parliament. Our Probe In the viral video, Yousaf is seen swearing an oath to Queen Elizabeth, which suggested that the video could be old. With the help of a keyword search, we found the same video used in the reports by The Washington Post and The Dawn in 2016. As per these reports, the video showed Yousaf delivering his oath of allegiance in Urdu after he was elected to the Scottish parliament. Reportedly, he first took the oath of allegiance in English and then in Urdu. Yousaf, a member of the Scottish National Party won the seat from the city of Glasgow. On the occasion, paying homage to his roots, Yousaf wore a traditional Scottish kilt with a sherwani jacket. On May 14, 2016, Yousaf tweeted a photo with his family at the Scottish Parliament. He can be spotted wearing the same outfit in this photo. We also searched if Yousaf took oath as the First Minister in Urdu. However, we couldn’t find any credible report suggesting the same. Yousaf was sworn in as the First Minister on March 29. Videos of this ceremony are available on the Internet. Yousaf cannot be heard speaking in Urdu in any of these videos. Instead, he was seen standing with his right hand upheld and bowing his head to the person administering the oath. The procedure followed for the swearing-in of the First Minister is available on the website of the House of Commons Library in the UK Parliament. Per this site, the First Minister is appointed via Royal Warrant, a legal document authorised by the King. The Lord President of the Court of Session administers the oath of office. Then, he administers another declaration to the First Minister as Keeper of the Scottish Seal. Finally, the Lord President administers the oath of allegiance to the King. The First Minister is required to silently indicate their assent by bowing their head. Yousaf’s predecessor Nicola Sturgeon also took oath in the same manner in 2021. It is hence clear that the video in question shows Yousaf being sworn in as a member of the Scottish parliament. It has nothing to do with his recent appointment as the First Minister.
