India Today Fact Check
Neither is Jaffar Hussain Meraj a Congress member nor is he from Karnataka. He’s an AIMIM MLA from Nampally, Telangana.
Following the Congress party’s thumping victory in Karnataka, a video of an alleged Congress MLA threatening a policeman has been widely shared on social media. A Facebook user who shared it claimed that Karnataka Congress MLA Jaffar Hussain Meraj of Nampally invited a police officer to his home in Jagtial and calmly explained that he would have to do as they said.
Another person made the same claim, alongside comments like, “Trends have started changing even before the formation of a government in Karnataka,” and, “The people of Karnataka will have to face the consequences of their deeds one day.” Others on Facebook and Twitter made similar claims.
India Today's investigation found that while Jaffar Hussain Meraj is indeed an MLA from Nampally, the constituency is located in Telangana and Meraj belongs to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, not Congress.
Our Probe
A keyword search on the internet led us to an Indian Express report on the winners of the 2018 Assembly election in Telangana. Jaffar Hussain of the AIMIM was mentioned in it as a winner from Nampally, Telangana. The same information was also mentioned on the Election Commission of India's official website.
We found Meraj’s official Facebook page, and his bio and cover image there mentioned the AIMIM and the Nampally Assembly constituency in Telangana.
We then looked for information about the viral clip and found a video news report by BBN News, a Hyderabad-based news outlet. In the report from May 11, the viral clip could be seen a little more than two minutes in.
Per the report, two women were allegedly manhandled and harassed on a bus by Jagtial Rural sub inspector called A Anil. Following that, the AIMIM MLA, along with other members of the party met both, the victim's family and the superintendent of police there. Jagtial is a city and the district headquarters of the Jagtial district of Telangana. The report added that the accused police officer was later suspended.
On May 11, the Deccan Chronicle also reported on this incident. The report contained a screenshot from the viral video. Telangana Today also published a news report about this on the same day.
We checked Meraj’s Facebook page and found that on May 11, he too had shared photos from his visit to the victim’s family. The post said that “On the guidance of AIMIM President Barrister Asaduddin Owaisi sahab and AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi Sahab,” Meraj reached Jagtial and met the victims’ family and assured them that “we'll demand for immediate Suspension and strict action against the Sub-Inspector.”
Thus, it is clear that the viral video has nothing to do with Karnataka at all.
