New Delhi (Vishvas News). A screenshot of a post from the social media platform X, allegedly made by former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going viral, featuring a controversial photo of Md Yunus, head of Bangladesh’s interim government.
Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral post was made from a fake account impersonating Sheikh Hasina, as she does not have an account on X.
What is the viral post?
On December 1, 2024, an objectionable picture of Md Yunus was posted (archive link) from an X accounting impersonating Sheikh Hasina. The profile picture features Hasina and the account name is displayed as ‘Sheikh Hasina’, with the username @Sheikh12Hasina.
Facebook user Rajeev Damodharan has shared the screenshot of this post (archive link).
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we began by scanning the profile behind the viral post. The account was created in November 2024 and got the blue tick in the same month. Its bio includes a link to a domain purchase website, raising suspicions that the account may be fake.
We then reviewed the X handle of Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League. On December 1, 2024, a post clarified that a fake account is active with the name @Sheikh71Hasina and has also got a blue tick. Regarding this, the party requested X to remove the blue tick from this account to avoid any confusion. They further stated that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina does not maintain any accounts on X or Facebook.
While conducting a keyword search, we discovered information published on a Bangladeshi website on February 20, 2023. According to the information provided, the Bangladesh government clarified that Sheikh Hasina does not maintain any accounts on X or other social media platforms.
This confirms that Sheikh Hasina does not have an X account.
In this regard, Arafat, News Editor of Bangladesh Probash Times, also stated that Sheikh Hasina does not maintain any official account on X.
According to a news article published in Dainik Jagran on December 3, 2024, Sheikh Hasina has been in India since the coup in Bangladesh. While virtually addressing an Awami League event in New York, Hasina criticised Yunus for attacks on temples, churches and the religious organisation ISKCON.
In this regard, we contacted the number listed on the Awami League Bangladesh website. They confirmed that the account is fake.
We also scanned the Facebook profile of the user who shared the screenshot of the post made from the fake account. The user has around 2200 friends.
Conclusion: A fake account created in the name of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has posted an objectionable picture of Yunus. Sheikh Hasina does not have an account on the X. Story Link:
