India Today Fact Check
This is an old video from Hyderabad. Raju, the person seen in the video doesn’t, per the police, is not Muslim.
A video of a man allegedly adulterating milk is making the rounds on social media. Allegedly, the milkman in this video from Nashik, Maharashtra, was Muslim.
In the video, a man milking a cow could be seen drinking milk from a bucket in front of him. After drinking the milk, he poured back the leftover into the bucket and added water from a tank behind him. In the background, the sound of the Azaan could also be heard. A text running through the video read in Hindi, "The kind of milk these 'Jihadis' in Nashik sell to Hindus."
A Twitter user sharing the viral video, wrote, "For Shamefull Shameless Indian Muslims. For this honesty, the brother should be honoured with a prize." The archived version of one such tweet can be seen here.
India Today found that the viral video is from Hyderabad, and not Nashik. Also, it was falsely shared with a communal spin.
Our Probe
A keyword search led us to a YouTube video uploaded on August 19, 2020, by "ShriTv News". The caption stated that a man was caught mixing polluted water in milk at the Jahangeer Dairy Farm in Hyderabad.
The video’s descript noted that a case was registered against the dairy owner at the Dabeerpura police station after a worker was seen mixing contaminated water in a milk bucket. We also across several news reports from August 2020.
A report by The Times of India titled "Milk adulteration viral video: Hyderabad police launch manhunt for the offender", noted that a case was registered against the dairy owner and his employee Raju under sections 269, 272, 273, read with section 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The Police launched a manhunt after complainant Syed Azmat Hussain Jaffery initiated the legal process.
Per the report, police summoned Jahangeer Dairy owner Mohammad Ghouse to record his statement. He identified the worker as Raju from Bihar. Raju fled from the farm immediately after the video went viral. Police launched a manhunt to nab Raju.
The video went viral with similar false communal claims, immediately after the incident picked up the news. Many such claims were then debunked by leading fact-checking organisations. A report by Boom quoted Station House Officer (SHO) of Dabeerpura, N Satyanaraya as saying that Raju, the man in the viral video, was not Muslim.
Several other reports corroborating the place of incident and religion of the delinquent can be seen here and here.
We also reached out to Dabeerpura police to know the status of the case. The report will be updated as and when the response is received.
Thus, it’s clear that a video of a man seen adulterating milk from Hyderabad is being shared with a misleading and false communal claim.
