  • A drone recording of a candlelight protest is making the rounds on social media with a claim that the protest was by people in West Bengal demanding justice for the August 9 rape and murder victim at Kolkata’s R G Kar Hospital. History has been created! The people of entire Kolkata took to the streets today. It is impossible to stop this movement until Tilottama gets justice#RGKarProtest pic.twitter.com/BEYdRUnWiV — ᴅᴇʙᴀᴊɪᴛ ꜱᴀʀᴋᴀʀ🇮🇳 (@debajits3110) September 4, 2024 Last night, West Bengal erupts in #JusticeForRGKar protest with Dwijendralal Ray’s patriotic classic, ‘Dhana Dhanyo Pushpe Bhora’.. pic.twitter.com/drYUVVRFoJ — Pratyush Kanth (@PratyushKanth) September 5, 2024 The claim reads: “History has been created! The people of entire Kolkata took to the streets today. It is impossible to stop this movement until Tilottama gets justice#RGKarProtest“. Another post with a similar claim read: “Last night, West Bengal erupts in #JusticeForRGKar protest with Dwijendralal Ray’s patriotic classic, ‘Dhana Dhanyo Pushpe Bhora’.” The video plays the patriotic Bengali song “Dhana Dhanyo Pushpe Bhora,” written by Dwijendralal Ray in the background. FACT CHECK When the Digiteye India team checked the viral video on Twitter, several counter-claims were made that it was from Bangladesh and not India. Further search revealed that the original video was from Bangladesh, posted on Youtube on August 11, 2024. The candle-light demonstration shown in the video was held at Uttara, near Dhaka to pay tribute to the martyrs and has nothing to do with the RG Kar trainee doctor’s rape and murder incident. Secondly, the video was shared on Facebook on August 9, whereas the RG Kar incident took place on the same night in Kolkata, hence not matching with the protests which took place much later in West Bengal. Hence, the claim is false. Claim: Video shows massive protest in Kolkata against RG Kar rape incident on Sept. 4, 2024. Conclusion: Misrepresentation — Original drone video was from Bangladesh candle-light vigil held on Aug. 9, 2024 and not from Kolkata as claimed. Rating — Misrepresentaiton —
