  • Fact Check: PM Modi did not announce slashing fuel prices, 2016 video shared with misleading claim An old video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2016 with the false claim that he announced the slashing of fuel prices. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not make any such announcement. This video is from December 3, 2016, shot during Modi’s Parivartan Rally in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. There he focused on issues like demonetisation and corruption. A video that’s being shared by many online shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally. Alongside Modi, Uttar Pradesh Deputy-Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, and Bharatiya Janata Party leader OP Mathur can be seen in the video. Those sharing it, claimed in Hindi, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi suddenly announces cut on petrol prices." AFWA's investigation however found that Modi did not make any such announcement. Also, this video is old. AFWA Probe At the 3.39 second mark on that video, we spotted some clues. “Parivartan Maha Rally”, and “Mission 300+” banners in Hindi can be seen in that video. We then ran a keyword search on Facebook and Youtube and which led us to the original video. On December 3, 2016, the same video was shared by the BJP’s official Facebook Page, with the title, "LIVE: PM Shri Narendra Modi addressing Parivartan Rally in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh". We also found the same video on PM Modi's official YouTube channel with a similar title. In the speech, PM Modi did not say anything about slashing fuel prices. Rather, he focused on other issues like demonetisation, corruption, mobile banking, Digital India, and various welfare schemes, among other things. On November 8, 2016, Modi announced the demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes. While addressing the crowd at the Parivartan Rally, the PM said, "Shouldn't I fight corruption? Is fighting corruption a crime? Why are some people calling me a wrongdoer for fighting corruption." He spoke about issues like black money, corruption, and poverty. On December 3, 2016, the Times of India published a report on how PM Modi encouraged people to use mobile banking from a Moradabad rally. On that same day, India Today shared a video report titled, "I am fighting this war for you, what will those accusing me do? I am a fakir. I will walk away with my little belongings: PM Narendra Modi in Moradabad rally". Media reports, however, did not say anything about the speech focusing on slashing fuel prices. Thus, it’s clear that this video was shared with a misleading claim. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
