India Today Fact Check
The viral video was shot inside the Gorakhpur-Banaras Intercity train and not a Vande Bharat train.
A case of fire on the Bhopal-Delhi bound Vande Bharat train recently made headlines. The incident that occurred on July 17 involved a battery box in one of the coaches catching fire. The entire episode led to numerous videos surfacing online, purportedly showing the poor conditions of the Vande Bharat trains.
One such video allegedly shows a broken chair in a Vande Bharat coach. The video contained the words, "If you want comfortable travel then spend money and travel in Vande Bharat." In the video, passengers could be seen complaining and demonstrating the faulty conditions of the reclining chairs.
A person who shared the viral video wrote, "Comfortable journey in Vande Bharat. Even if you don't want to lean back, still it'll automatically make you lean." An archived version of the post can be seen here.
India Today found that the viral video was not of a Vande Bharat train but was actually filmed on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Intercity train. The issue was subsequently resolved at the next station after a complaint was filed with the Railways.
Our Probe
Upon conducting a reverse search of keyframes from the viral video, we came across several social media posts containing it. One of these posts was made on July 8 by a Facebook account called Agril Career. At the time of writing this story, the video had garnered 10 million views and 108K likes.
The video's description mentioned that it was filmed on the AC coach of the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Intercity train. In the comments section, the person who shared the video specified their seat number and stated that they uploaded the video from inside the train.
The North Eastern Railways took cognisance of the video and responded to the post about the faulty seat, and wrote that a complaint had been received and the issue was subsequently resolved.
For further details, we reached out to the admin of the Facebook page, Devendra Patel. He confirmed that he had originally recorded the video. Patel refuted all the claims made that the video was shot on a Vande Bharat train and clarified that it was filmed on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Intercity train.
He shared the original video with India Today from which we extracted its EXIF data. The data provided us with the exact coordinates where the video was shot. It corroborated with the route of the train on which it plies, as well as the details provided by the North Eastern Railways in its reply.
He also shared his train booking details with India Today. The journey date mentioned on the ticket corresponded to the upload date of the video on Devendra Patel's Facebook page as well as the details of its recording in the EXIF data. Patel clarified that he had filed a complaint about the broken seat with the railway staff at Deoria station, where he boarded the train. Patel said, "The complaint was promptly attended to and resolved at the subsequent station, which was Bhatni Junction."
Furthermore, we came across videos by YouTubers documenting their journey on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Intercity Express. The design and colour pattern of the seats in these videos matched those seen in the viral video.
Thus, it’s evident that a video depicting a faulty reclining seat on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi Intercity Express was falsely associated with the Vande Bharat trains.
