India Today Fact Check
This video is from a 2021 protest held by Shiv Sena in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra against rising fuel prices
With assembly polls at the doorstep in Karnataka, prominent political figures have been making their way to the state to garner support from the voters. In the past two months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Karnataka on several occasions, inaugurating and laying foundation stones for numerous projects.
A video that’s been shared widely recently shows a large group of men sporting saffron scarves and carrying flags, with some standing on a bullock cart. Per those sharing the video, these were Hindu groups in the poll-bound state protesting against the prime minister. In the footage, some men can be heard raising slogans against the Modi government. The archived version of such a post can be found here.
India Today’s investigation found that the video is from a 2021 protest held by the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.
Our Probe
Reverse searching the viral video’s keyframes led us to a report published on February 5, 2021, by the Marathi daily Sakal. This report included a photograph from the same rally.
According to the report, the photograph was taken during a bullock cart march on February 5, 2021. The march was organised by the Shiv Sena in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra to protest fuel price hikes. Shiv Sena MLA Santosh Bangar reportedly led the rally, which began at the party office and continued via the Indira Gandhi Chowk in Hingoli.
Further, we found videos of the rally on YouTube that were uploaded on February 5. These videos clearly show slogans being raised against the fuel price hike.
Per reports, retail prices of automobile fuels reached record highs across India in February 2021, leading to demonstrations in several parts of the country. According to an Outlook report, on February 5, Shiv Sena held protests in several parts of Maharashtra against the Centre over the fuel price hike. At the time, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government was in power in Maharashtra.
In 2021, a photograph from the same rally was circulated, with people claiming that it showed Bajrang Dal members protesting farm laws and PM Modi in Uttar Pradesh. At the time, India Today reached out to MLA Bangar for clarification, and he confirmed that the picture was from a Shiv Sena rally organised by him.
It is, hence, clear that the video in question is from an old protest held by the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, and has nothing to do with poll-bound Karnataka.
