  • Fact Check: Arma 3 strikes again! Video game footage falsely shared as Brazil protestors shooting govt plane A video game simulation has been shared as protesters in Brazil firing at a government aircraft. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is not from Brazil, or for that matter, even real. This footage is from the video game Arma 3. Brazilian security forces detained about 1,500 people after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasilia on January 8. Following the insurrection attempt, footage allegedly showing demonstrators in Brazil firing at a government plane with improvised anti-aircraft guns has gone viral on social media. A Twitter user shared this video and wrote, “Escalation in #Brazil as protestors fire on government plane with improvised anti-aircraft guns. As you can see these home-built weapons are very inaccurate, which poses a danger to other civilians.” The archived version of this claim can be seen here. While many doubted the authenticity of this claim, some believed it to be a genuine video from Brazil. Some also claimed that this video was not from Brazil but from Mexico. AFWA found that the viral video is from a video game. AFWA PROBE We noticed that many people wrote words like “Arma” and “video game” while commenting on the viral video. We subsequently ran a keyword search on YouTube. This led us to a three-minute-long video on the channel “Compared Comparison”. The visuals seen in the viral video can be seen here at the 1.39-minute mark. On comparing the visuals of the viral video with this one, we noticed several similarities between them. In the caption of this video, it was mentioned that this was a simulation created in Arma 3, an open-world, realism-based, military tactical shooting video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive, a Czech video game developer. The person running the YouTube channel “Compared Comparison” is based in Austria and has stated in the “About” section that he creates modern cinematic military films using Arma 3 and DCS (Digital Combat Simulator). Earlier, videos from Arma 3 were passed off as real war footage in the backdrop of the Armenia-Azerbaijan war, the Israel-Palestine conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war. . AFWA debunked many such claims. Thus, it’s clear that a video game simulation has been shared as protesters in Brazil firing at a government aircraft.
