  • Last Updated on March 20, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that we only get female animals to eat, and this means that we are taking estrogen, and males should consume testosterone and not this. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim A Facebook reel starts with the caption, “Why only give us female animals to eat?” advises males that we only get female animals to eat, which means that we are taking estrogen. Males should consume testosterone and not this. It also explains that consuming this will change the hormones. Fact Check Are male bodies only composed of testosterone hormones? Not exactly. While testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, it is not the only hormone in the male body. There are many other hormones in the male body that play essential roles in various physiological processes. In addition to testosterone, males also produce other androgens, such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and androstenedione. Males also contain estrogen, although in much lower amounts than females. Estrogen is typically thought of as a female hormone, but it is actually present in both males and females. In males, estrogen is produced primarily by the testes and adrenal glands. Do we consume meat made up of only female animals? No, we do not consume meat made up of only female animals. Both male and female animals are used for meat production. In many cases, male animals are raised specifically for meat production, such as beef cattle and pigs. In other cases, both male and female animals are raised for meat production, such as chickens and turkeys. Males intended for meat are routinely castrated. Some cultures even favour the meat of male sheep and goats. Does eating female animal meat increase estrogen in males? Not exactly. There is a lack of credible scientific evidence to prove that consuming meat will lead to an increased estrogen level in males. Firstly, as stated above, we consume meat irrespective of the gender of the cattle. Secondly, the estrogen consumed through meat is negligible. The amount of estrogen in the animals that we eat is not sufficient enough to elevate the female hormones. Our bodies produce much more levels of estrogen than we could ever consume in meat. Another research concluded that compared to a commonly prescribed hormone replacement therapy for women after hysterectomy or menopause, the estrogenic activity in a tofu burger was three times higher. On the other hand, a quarter-pound ground beef burger with approximately the same calorie count, a serving of milk, or rice, all had at least 750-fold less estrogenic activity. Therefore, further research is needed to prove this claim, and until there is definitive evidence to prove this, the claim stands mostly false.
