More than 1.5 million people lost power and thousands of flights were cancelled. Several videos and images of The blizzard are being shared on the internet claiming to be recent. Among them is a time-lapse video that covers a 48 hour long snowfall that is said to be from the recent blizzard that struck North America. Several media outlets and social media users have shared the video. An NDTV report carrying the same video titled “Stunning Time-Lapse Video Captures 48 Hours Of Blizzard Impact In US Town”, An archived version of the report can be seen here. Similarly other media outlets including India.com also published reports carrying the same footage attributing it to the recent Blizzard in the US. “The one-minute-long video comprises 48 hours of Storm Jonas as Herndon, North Virginia was buried by the blizzard. It shows how a town was all covered by snow in a period of 48 hours” the report stated. The said video is also viral on social media. Several twitter users have shared the video with the same claim. The video has garnered millions of views. Link to the tweets here, here, here and here. To investigate the truth behind the video, Newschecker first split the video into keyframes and performed a Google reverse image search on them. During the search we found the same video on a website www.9gig.com, where this video was published on 9 December 2018. The video has also been shared on Reddit, three years ago. While searching on YouTube with a few keywords, we found this video on YouTube channel Worse Than Chiggers published on January 25, 2016. “The blizzard of 2016 in 1 minute. Northern Virginia January 22 -24, 2016. On further search we found the same video on Daily Mail website with a detailed report. “The one-minute-long video comprises 48 hours of Storm Jonas as Herndon, North Virginia was buried by the blizzard. According to the filmmaker, the camera was set up on the front porch and captured one frame every 30 seconds between January 22 and 24”, the report stated. Thus, the Newschecker investigation revealed that the time-lapse video claimed to be from a recent snowstorm in the US is actually from 2016.
