  • Fact Check: Video of police dragging young men out of their homes is not related to Ram Navami India Today's probe found that the video is old and from Hyderabad. It has nothing to do with the Ram Navami clashes on March 30, 2023. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a 2022 video from Hyderabad. The men were protesting against alleged remarks of suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh on Prophet Muhammad. The recent Ram Navami festivities in multiple states of India were marred by incidents of violence, and several people were arrested by police in connection with the clashes. A video of police arresting young men by dragging them out of their homes was circulated on social media in this context. The video was shared with claims that it shows Gujarat police arresting Muslim men who allegedly pelted stones at a Ram Navami rally. The same video was also shared claiming to be related to the Ram Navami clashes in Maharashtra. An archived version of one such post can be seen here. However, India Today's investigation found that the video is old and from Hyderabad. It has nothing to do with the clashes that erupted during Ram Navami celebrations on March 30, 2023. Geolocating the video The number plate of the police vehicle is visible in one part of the video, and the number written on it begins with "TS 09." After searching, it was found that this number was from Hyderabad Central. Additionally, in this video, we can see the boards of two shops named "SHAFFAF" and "MASQUATI". We searched for these shops on Google Maps and found they were located in Zohra Colony in Hyderabad’s Shalibanda area. Story behind the video With the help of reverse image search of the viral video’s keyframes, a similar clip was found tweeted by NDTV on August 25, 2022. As per this tweet, the video was from a protest held against the alleged remarks of suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh on the Prophet Muhammad. The demonstration was held at Shalibanda in Hyderabad on August 24, 2022. AajTak also used footage from the same video in its report about the protest. As per reports, on August 22, 2022 Raja Singh released a video allegedly making derogatory statements against the Prophet. Following this, large crowds gathered in various parts of the city demanding action against the BJP leader. Reportedly, the police brought the situation under control after a lathi charge. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had alleged that the cops used disproportionate force and barged into protestors' homes at midnight. It is hence clear that the video in question is old and from Hyderabad. It has nothing to do with the recent riots that broke out during Ram Navami celebrations. In 2022, the same video was circulated with people claiming it to be from Uttar Pradesh. India Today fact checked it at that time.
